  • At 70 yrs old, I can confidently affirm this is not a midlife crisis. This is your awakening. There is so much more ahead of you. Embrace it.
  • In summary, Gooby, a former neurosurgeon with 20 years of training and experience, left his career due to dissatisfaction and ethical concerns about the effectiveness of his work. He discovered that lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, and stress management were more crucial for patients' recovery than surgeries, which often did not address underlying issues. Gooby struggled with the realization that the medical system was not set up to promote true healing, which led to ethical conflicts and a sense of being stuck in a job he no longer believed in. With his wife's support, he decided to quit his job, despite having no clear plan for the future, to avoid continuing a life that was making him unhappy. He started a YouTube channel to document his hikes and time spent with his dog, finding solace in nature and aiming to cherish the moments with his pet while exploring new possibilities for his life.

The empathy and compassion of your wife to just want to see you set free for your own peace of mind is a real testament of love. What an amazing woman.
  • sitting in nature, mountains in the background, minimal editing, just a man talking about life for 40 mins. This is what YouTube is for

You did something 99.9999% of people would never be able to do (become a neurosurgeon) and now you're doing something 99.9999999999% of people would never be able to do - living a fulfilling life.

Absolutely crazy. I paused this video a few days ago when it was at like 1k views and now it has 6.6 million. I think a lot of people needed to hear this my dude. Good job.
  • those who got this video out of no where on their YouTube, we are blessed.
  • Dude thought he was quitting being a doctor, but gave the best doctor visit 5m+ people ever had in a 6 day window. Thank you Hero.
  • I’m a brain tumor survivor and as someone who has met many neurologists and neurosurgeons in my lifetime, there is nothing worse than the doctors who are very clearly run down, overworked, not passionate and frustrated with the system. To see that you’ve stepped away to live a happy life brings so much joy to people like us and we thank you for all the time and energy you did put into neurology and the brain when you did!

We lost a good doctor but we gained a good human being❤🇩🇴🙏

I was shocked when I heard he was a neurosurgeon for 20 years. This dude looks like he's 20
  • A man has two lives. The first one starts when he is born, the second life starts - when he realises he has only 1.
  • I needed a five level spinal fusion due to stage 4 cancer. Tumors were growing in my spine, and cancer in my bones were eating away at my spine as well. Without an emergency surgery, I might’ve been paralyzed. A neurosurgeon cut out the tumor and replaced my spine with hardware. Thanks to him, a year later I am able to walk and live my life for the remainder of whatever I have left. For that freedom, I am so thankful to him. There may have been surgeries that could’ve been avoided in your career as you described, but there may have also been surgeries that are life changing like mine and patients who are forever grateful like me. That said, your story about changing your path resonated with me. I wish I’d learned this lesson earlier. Chasing IPO gold in Silicon Valley led to so much stress, unhappiness and an unhealthy lifestyle. Do I think my cancer could’ve been caught or maybe even prevented if I’d taken better care of myself and not got caught up by societal pressures and riches? Definitely. I wish you so much continued peace and happiness in the future.

I am a CVICU RN and right now I go to work, come home angry and burnt out. I walk into Trader Joe’s some days and wish I worked there. Sometimes I think about quitting and applying for a job as a park ranger. But what stresses me out so much and makes me angry at the same time is knowing even though I am so smart and have all these certifications in cardiac critical care, I am absolutely not qualified to do anything else in life. Your video is like a breath of fresh air into my lungs, like a sigh of relief that I am not alone in feeling this way that I can maybe take some time and slow down and be in nature and figure out the next step. Thank you so so much for uploading this.

My grandfather taught me, at 15, " learn two jobs, one with your mind, one with your hands... At 35, I walked away from corporate & became a carpenter. Retired & very happy.

This is a man who saw through all the bullshit and decided to live. Good for him. The system destroys brilliance.
  • Back pain/nerve pain sufferer here. My pain goes away entirely when I do seasonal landscaping work. It returns every winter from too much couch sitting. Activity is key. Avoiding stationary positions is key.
