  • Russell, I really like that board on board! I have built a 16x20 bunkie with loft and a shed with hemlock board and batten that I milled and nailed it green. Although it did shrink , I had minimal issues with cracking and splitting. I think I will try your method on my next project. I need a storage shed for my tractor implements. Keep up the great work!
  • How's she goin'? The board on board looks great Russel!! I'm glad you decided to do the whole side like this. I think the metal pieces wouldn't look as good as this all wood side does. When I built my camp I used hemlock and kind of went with board and batten. The boards were 6 X 1. But for the bats, since I didn't want them to be 1" think, I ripped a 6" board in 3 pieces and then resawed these 2" wide pieces. So my bats are about 2" wide and about 3/8" think. And like you say the hemlock splits pretty easy. All my siding was green when I put it on but since then of course it has dried out and most every bat has split!! Oh well, it still looks pretty good from a distance!! LOL Thanks for posting this Russell. Your sawmill enclosure is looking mighty fine!! We'll talk to yas...
  • I've never been a big fan of hemlock lumber because of the splitting issues! I think what you have done with your board on board siding really looks great! Your concern of putting the roof on first is called uplift. The roof could act like a sail if the wind came in a the right direction. With all the walls on and the saw mill in the building I don't think you will have any problems. I think you are doing an impressive job Russell, it looke really good!

  • First thing, I am NOT a carpenter, although I have sheeted a building before, with the help of a few buddies. This is the first time I've seen this "board on board" style done, it looks pretty good actually. I think your sawmill shed if coming along nicely. Let's see now, how you go.
