I always love it when you refer to βthis is how my dad itβ! His legacy lives on thru your carpentry. My dad built a barn when I was young and I can still see the trusses and barn being built by him. He taught me a lot. It has stood for over 50 years now. I have enjoyed watching this cabin build and learn something every time I watch.

I wouldn't worry so much about shrinking as I would about swelling when the wood expands with moisture from rain and so forth. Here in New England we always leave a space between boards. That's what the batten is for and if the siding is to be painted we prime both sides to help prevent cupping. Same is done with clapboards.

I was taught that you only nail one side of the baton to let the board shrink; and come back next year to finish nailing.
