I've built a few vans and a chicken coupe. Other than that I don't really have any experience as a framer, carpenter, or a builder in any sense. We decided to build our own home to save money and to take on the project and hopefully enjoy it. The first couples days of framing were good until mistakes were made. Building this house may be a bad idea, but it's not gonna stop us...

Actually, Trent, it is the responsibility of the person doing the nailing to make sure the boards are on their mark. The person laying the boards down can't be sure they don't move. Allie's response was a lot better than you would have gotten on someone else's job site. I love your series.

As a former teacher I always told the kids you have to learn from your mistakes. I love to see you guys not getting so down on yourselves and being teachers yourselves.

When I taught 3rd grade I bought giant erasers for my entire class and handed them out on the first day and told them that I hope they make lots of mistakes and use up the entire eraser, because that will mean they are learning new things, and if no mistakes are made, then I haven't taught them a thing.

The way a true craftsman can be measured is not by the mistakes you may make, but rather how you accept them, get back to work, and correct them. Trent, I hope you don't blame Allie for the boards being in the wrong place if you nailed them in. You should have told her about the X BEFORE instead of after. I'm glad you said later, "Mistakes are how you learn." Allie, you don't look ridiculous in that hat. You need a bigger hat like Brandon's! And kudos to you for being sensible about the sun exposure. Glad to see you got some work gloves, too. You guys are doing great. Your house will be awesome. You can do it!
