He played the sub conscious mind of the opponent. Before every penalty kick Krul warmed up on one side of the goal and dived on the other side to save the kick. He let the opponent subconsciously think that the other side from where krul did his stretches was vacant.

I remember this game. I supported Costa rica as underdogs, and remember that Holland dominated all the game . If not Navas,it could be 3 or 4:0 for Holland. But Krul saved the day for Hollands !😅
