Peter Attia: What if we're wrong about diabetes?

As a young ER doctor, Peter Attia felt contempt for a patient with diabetes. She was overweight, he thought, and thus responsible for the fact that she needed a foot amputation. But years later, Attia received an unpleasant medical surprise that led him to wonder: is our understanding of diabetes right? Could the precursors to diabetes cause obesity, and not the other way around? A look at how assumptions may be leading us to wage the wrong medical war.

I wish the world had more humble and genuine doctors like him.
  • Your heartfelt apology at the end was one of the most noteworthy things I’ve seen on YouTube in a long time! A brilliant individual who is also humble is something that is not very common but so uplifting to observe! May your tribe increase.

"Scientific truth isn't final but constantly evolving" I need more people to learn this.

It takes so much courage to publicly admit that you were wrong, Peter Attia! Your message brought tears to my eyes and I hope the lady heard you.
  • OMG, a doctor who is human, humble and actually looks beyond what he thinks he knows!

This is the best Ted talk I have watched and I lost my mom 3 years ago when she was given the option of amputation and refused to let her legs go. I lost my sister to pancreatic cancer last year. I wish every doctor could watch this and have the same conviction to get to the truth and make a difference to millions of people who have been treated with care for the profit of big pharmaceutical companies and HMO’s that decide care without medical training. Thank you for this. FDA, CDC, and our government has failed in their duty to do what they exist to do.
  • This was 9 years ago, but I feel it’s still very appropriate in 2022, we don’t know what we don’t know! This is a high quality individual that really cares, I so appreciate his words and am looking forward to learning more about his practice. So many people in my family died from the complications of diabetes and my dad followed everything his doctors told him to the letter, he got his weight in control, at the end of his life, it was his kidneys that finally failed, he chose not to do dialysis after giving it a try and realizing his quality of life was going to be terrible. Dialysis one day, sleep the next day, etc. I miss him

Patients can smell a physician's contempt from a mile away. It's why I'd rather take a beating than go to the doctor. Thank you for this video - some of the docs I've been to could learn a lot from you.

This has got to be the most powerful TED speech I've seen, and probably one of the most important ones.
  • @Native_love
If that were my late mom, she'd say "thank you!" She had all kinds of amputations before her passing. You are an angel! Much love and blessings to you Doctor! You are a TRUE DOCTOR!

Humility and compassion, two of the most powerful forces in the Universe. Huge respect.

Watched this 3 times and it still upsets me. Great honest and humble talk. When I am with obese patients in the hospital this video pops into my psych every time and reminds me to remain empathic.

I cried right along with him. What a stellar character this doctor has developed, more so, than most over a lifetime! What an honorable man he is to review and learn from the past. If only more doctors, more men, more women, were more like this doctor! He is golden! ✨⭐️✨

This is almost 10 years old and it's even incredibly important to hear. I may not be that woman in the hospital but there are so many of us who have been gaslighted like that woman for years. Dr Peter Thank you for learning and becoming a better Dr.

It is wonderful to see a young physician recommit to his Hypocratic Oath not to cause harm, self-monitor, and evolve. His future patients will thank him for it. God bless!!
  • @bunny_smith
She provided a valuable lesson to that man and made him a better person. He will be a better physician as well for having known her.
  • @ianmcdonald8648
"I hope you can forgive me" ....these words should be coming from every single human. We have all let somebody down. To seek it and to give it. Thanks Peter for the reminder

This has to be one of my all time favorite TED talks, and health videos in general. Really appreciate Dr. Attia’s humbleness, and all the amazing work that’s come from that.
