I wish I could give more than one like to this video, Kelly, because I absolutely enjoyed and appreciated it so much! Your commentary added some really great depth and meaning to the video you were reacting to. And you shared some wonderful things to ponder further on my own about how we relate to one another in society! I hope you do more of these types of videos in the future! You conveyed so beautifully how having empathy for our fellow humans and their life experiences is so important. It’s really a shame that empathy seems to be woefully lacking in so many aspects of our societal discourse these days. It’s been replaced by entrenched tribalism and censorship of opposing views. I blame a lot of that on the rise of social media, but still have hope that some day empathy will re-emerge and become a more prominent force again in how we interact with one another 🙏 I don’t place much importance on critic reviews of film in this Internet age we live in. Critical Drinker summed up quite well the bias and agenda driven reviews that we are bombarded with on a weekly basis by those who wear the mantle of film critic. I consider Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel as the last in a bygone era of the authentic film critic and I’m glad you mentioned them in your commentary. I absolutely love the way you mentioned The Wire and beautifully wove it into your commentary. I’m about to start watching the show again as I do every few years, each time discovering nuggets of brilliance I had missed. Still need to watch Six Feet Under and added Old Henry to my watch list! Loved the Nova sightings throughout the video, especially the one at the end 🐈‍⬛😻🐾
  • I myself am sort of centrist only when averaged. I lament the fact that we can't have a calm, or at least tolerant, conversation between differing views. Disagreement now means evil, and it is truly the worst degradation of our time.

Appreciating your effort to mediate the situation. Not many of us left in the world. A Jedi, you are :)

ESG is the new Hays code, a moral crusade that eventually as with the Hays code will be rebelled against, as customers hunger for good engaging entertainment cant be contained in an authoritarian enforced '' Woke Moral Highgound''

Speaking from experience, it's always for the best, to make our own opinions based on what we know, instead of letting others condition ours. Applies for anything, reviews especially. And I used to watch plenty of the movie reviews youtubers back then, until I decided to simply stop. Always a pleasure to see you uploading, Kelly. Hope you've been doing well lately 🙏🏻

0:44 close to 7 years ago sounds about right, since that's when Ghostbusters 2016 came out and RT went into the septic tank.

Great discourse, Kelly. The thing I love about this is you take a point and actually talk about it! Some of the review/reaction videos I've seen they just take a point and say, at most, a couple of sentences about it. You really give over your views on what's being discussed with some pretty insightful and well thought out and explained points of your own! Great stuff. More please!!! :)

I've been following fellow Scot Critical Drinker ever since he started his channel (read some of his books too). He is very succinct, and insightful, and I enjoy his acidly humorous approach to his reviews. Don't know the other chap, will have to check him out. I stopped trusting internet reviews, at least not taking them on face value without viewing a broad cross-section to try to balance them. Opinions are one thing, but far too much of it is politically driven rather than an honest perspective, and this has led to polarising revisionism that essentially tries to mislead and even rewrite history. Good video Kelly, your commentary was nicely done, expansive while being relevant. Well done! 🌹🌹🌹

Splendid video Kelly. The force is strong with you young Jedi ❤

Glad to see you still making videos Kelly. I totally agree with you on nuance and trying to see both sides.  That's one of the biggest issues I have with not only critics but also some youtubers and social media in general.  So many are encouraged to be unreasonably 1-sided and blind to the opposing viewpoint.  So much is deemed to either be all bad or all good.  It must only be criticized or praised.  Of course, this is going to be great for views & engagement, but its beneficiality is questionable at best. Now everyone is going to be judgemental to an extent, but good lord, not everything has to be taken to an extreme. As for Rotten Tomatoes, I stopped using them entirely until they implemented user reviews.  Overall, their critic score has always been unreliable & this has arguably been exacerbated in recent years.  Their user reviews are so much better, but I've been seeing some odd stuff going on with those too recently.  As I see it, IMDB has always been superior overall.  No rating site will be perfect, but for the longest time IMDB has been more accurate overall with more consistency.

I always enjoy your wise and thoughtful perspectives. I very much vibe with studying with open curiosity, as many angles as possible. But as I grow, I'm realizing, just how different I am, and we all are, in our abilities to engage in this contemplative exercise. Some people don't have nearly the same patience in their curiosity with observing various perspectives that don't necessarily align with their own, which often times is tied to their percieved identity. Especially recently, I've been surprised by the level of intolerance in those around me I consider to be my friends and family, to observe, without deep reaction, to unique or challenging experiences to their own (yeah, I'm something of a namaste yogi myself lol ..jk yogis can be particularly closed minded).  My mom passed away this last mother's day. She literality taught me the joy of the love of cinema. We shared this love together. The very first film she took me to as a baby in theaters, and to her relief, I sat through the whole movie, was the Akira Kurosawa film Rashomon. Maybe it was just the compelling cinematography that kept me engaged as a baby, but as I analyze that movie as an adult, it's one that gets a lot of respect from me not only in it's artful meditative story telling, but it's ability to touch on our own personal journey in the pursuit of what is truth through the lends of multiple perspectives, in this case, characters that are all flawed and recall things differently. I bring up this film, because it's a perfect example of one of the core values that I hold at the center of my personality. This philosophy, combined with my love of films, are fundamental pillars to who I am.  As regards to movies not being as good these days, I would argue in my own ignorance (I haven't seen any of the recent titles you mentioned) there isn't necessarily a lack of quality per say, but certainly a lack of timeless classics. I think you rightly touched on this being a social problem that we have to collectively workout, and it's tough since I believe in many ways, we're still in the middle of that process (assuming that there's and end or conclusion). Our lived experience are collectively quite different today compared to decades ago when these masterful writers and story tellers were living in a time that generally speaking required a certain amount of "self", of hard work, of perseverance to survive. That difficult human experience isn't as much a requirement, which can be good, but as a result, we do get an abundance of artistic expressions from writers that don't really have any compelling life experiences. I'll stop there, because I'm something of a "keep going-er" myself!
