The Spanish economy has been growing faster than most of its European neighbours recently - and that's in great part due to its tourism industry.

Tourism contributes around 13% of GDP growth to the country's economy thanks to a model based on sand, sea and sun.

This year, nearly 100 million foreign visitors are expected - a new record - and not everyone is happy about the influx of tourists.

Anti-tourism protests have been taking place across many parts of the count§y, including popular destinations Barcelona and Malaga.

they’re blaming the tourists when it’s their fellow countrymen running airbnb properties they should be talking to

"tourist go home" - ? Well that's literally the definition of a tourist: you go somewhere to visit and then you go home.
  • So if you live in Barcelona don't go beyond your city (or country), because in that case you're a tourist as well...

Blaming tourists is nonsense. Blame the politiicians for allowing so many landlords for renting out their properties for tourism rather than for residents and for not building enough affordable housing.
  • @Hazeman.
When they richer, they didn't want tourists. When they poorer, they want tourists. What a joke

How will these protestors feel when they travel outside their country?

....and during COVID the Spanish resorts were crying that they had no tourists coming over to aid their economy!

I cancelled my hotel reservations for Spain (Sept 2024) due to these demonstrations. There are still many countries to visit where tourists are welcome, so be it! Their government is the issue here, not us tourists!

This is why domestic vacations have become far more attractive to me over the past decade. I'd rather see my own country than be around people who hate me being there.

The biggest issue I have with this is that if you look at the statistics Spaniards are all over the globe. They are in Germany, Italy, visiting London America, but yet they don’t want anyone coming to their country. Seems so unbelievably absurd.

It is easy to blame tourists, but the problem is that laws allow AirBnB and other corporations to profit without considering locals. Fix those issues, set rent controls and tax corporations. Tourists and locals should be able to coexist and enjoy places together.
  • @privacyhelp
It's airbnb that should be banned. Not tourists.
  • @str20025
This is mainly in south Spain and particularly Barcelona. I’m Spanish and I can tell you… tourists are not the problem!!! Check your gov in these regions..
  • Something I think similar to Hawaii..housing rented to visitors which both raises prices and makes what's available for locals more scarce. That drives locals out..makes people upset..It's less about a lot of foreigners walking around and more about housing dynamics...I think anyway

As an Italian it is kind of not classy to do this to tourists, it's not their fault they can travel around if they want. They should go for the politician who are in control of people coming into their country.
  • @emiliopotin7506
Blaming tourist were the real problem are politicians and law makers not adressing a housing issue.
  • @josephdiao8149
It's hilarious cuz by definition going home is exactly what EVERY tourist will do. That's just called being a tourist.
  • @Im_T.O.
