In this episode we're Playing Dead Rising 4. Dead Rising 4 is a send up to Dead Rising 1 that utterly disregards everything about the series. Can it survive without its series identity? Can it craft one of it's own? Is it now just a zombie?

Dead Rising 4 is a hollywood interpretation of the actual event in Willamette, with Frank West played by a d-list celebrity under the name Hank East. Thats my head canon atleast.
  • I find it really weird and stupid how the last 3 Dead Risings were really similar, and the one time they make it nothing like Dead Rising, they market it as "WE'RE BACK TO OUR ROOTS GUYS FRANK'S BACK IT'S TOTALLY LIKE DEAD RISING 1!"
  • Jesus, Vick may be one of the most poorly written video game characters I've ever seen. So she tricked Frank into breaking into the research facility in the beginning so that she could have good photos for her story, only to then do a complete 180 on Frank for taking pictures and doing nothing about the atrocities - which was PRECISELY what she tricked him into going there for in the first place. Then she abandons his ass at the facility after failing miserably to 'make a difference' and, for no explicable reason, does yet another 180 (which makes it a 360, thus bringing her back to her original position) so that her motivation is once again her rivalry with Frank. Not to mention, she straight up backstabs Frank on multiple occasions, makes numerous morally dubious choices and displays characteristics (like just generally being unpleasant and stuffy to the point of obnoxiousness) which should delineate her as a clear-as-day villain in any other story. Do we get any payoff at the end, like seeing her suffer for all the trouble she's caused Frank? Nope, she survives and Frank unfathomably forgives her and they share the glory. She's such a poorly written character that Frank's character actually seems weaker just by being in proximity to her.
  • The irony is Frank's change to a whacky cartoon character could be explored as an attempt to cope with PTSD and make an interesting story but instead it comes across like they're just trying to turn him into a wisecracking Marvel Cinematic Universe protagonist but failing miserably

Wow, that's a pretty impressive minecraft mod, too bad they didn't bother changing the shadowmap resolution
  • The fact that the zombies and survivors are dressed in only yellow, orange and blue bothers the hell out of me. Did their laundry get run through vats at a factory that only manufactured three shades of paint?

Here, we have Frank West. In Dead Rising, he tried to help any Survivor he came across - injured, drunk, or even maniacal in a few cases. At the very end, after Carlito had died, he wasn't angry at him for releasing the zombie outbreak on Willamette. He was angry because Carlito involved Isabela Keyes, his young sister, in all this. In Dead Rising 4, he ignores people, insults people, and uses people. And some people really have the gall to act like these two versions of Frank West are the same person.
  • Gotta love the incredible "bosses" Santa guy Pumpkin guy Knight Lady Pirate guy Mascot guy and Cult Leader All of them with no backstory, personality or unique fighting styles or arenas.
  • @obeezy69
this ain't the same dude that covered wars ya know
  • Vick: Frank would have embellished the story, say he died a hero. (He did) He'd say he defeated Fontana in open combat. (He did..) Decline the evil of Dr. Blackburn. (He did and does it again) And has a little romance with the engineer. (They become decent friends at least) All in all, while Frank is a shitty human being in this game, Vick is far worse. He at least has some intelligence, she expects to solve the situation by fighting an entire paramilitary group by herself and burning one facility down, she also constantly shit talks Frank even after he saved her and died. She has no respect for anyone but acts likes she's Jesus Christ's nicer sister, she sucks.
  • @thekidkrow
I do think the "I also answer to Hey asshole and Frank who?" Line is actually really good. It's one of the few in character cracks frank makes in the game.

Y'know, those boss ideas were mostly jokes but really, if they had the writing of dead rising 1 or 2's psychopaths, they'd work. Half of what made them so fun is how mundane they were before, being normal store clerks or entertainers or unpopular teenagers. Hell, the ones that made it in could have been good, I do not know why you'd make "Frank West vs Mall Santa" boring, that one was practically gift-wrapped.
  • @Calvin_Coolage
I just feel bad for Ty Olsson, the guy voicing Frank here. He is trying his hardest to make this writing not suck shit, and he succeeds to an extent. His acting is probably the only reason Frank's dialogue doesn't make me fill ill. And as a bonus, I can now say Frank West shares a voice actor with a Gundam character, so that's kinda neat.
  • I think Dead Rising 4 may have finally served its one and only purpose: through the medium of this video, it got me interested in playing Dead Rising 1, which I am thoroughly enjoying.
  • @bloodrunsclear
1:11:24 This live action trailer got Frank West's character better than the entire game. He grins forcibly for a selfie, then his face falls back to looking tired and grim. THAT'S the concept of Dead Rising I thought:  the world is dire, but the characters are trying to make the most of it.
  • @RichterTheRat
One way I'd describe this is, "Wasted potential." The Christmas setting had lots of potential for some truly heart breaking and tragic psychopaths and survivors. It's supposed to be a happy time for everyone and it's all ruined by this massive tragedy. But no, we get a game apparently written by someone who had no idea what Frank and the series as a whole was all about, and designed by people who specialize in dumbing down elements over expanding them.
  • @MarioGMan25
You think it's entirely possible that, if/when DR5 happens, that it reveals that DR4 was "Dead Rising: The Movie" within the Dead Rising universe, and when the game starts it has actual Frank West just finishing his first viewing of it? Oh and then an outbreak in Hollywood happens so now DR5 takes place in Zombie Hollywood, and DR4 Frank (Now called Hank) is your Co-Op partner, and ACTUAL Frank, voiced by TJ Rotolo of course, is back as the the protag. ...PS the Final Boss is then a Steven Spielberg knockoff riding a robot T-Rex and you gotta fight him by fusing 5 Exo-Suits together to make a giant Exo-Suit.
  • @TimeBomb014X
DR4 has the same protagonist as the first, set in the same location as the first game, yet it is the exact polar opposite of what the original tried to be. You literally couldn't miss the point more aside from turning DR4 Into a card game
  • @EmoJello
"To be Frank, it is terrible" is such a perfect use of word play lol
