Playing Brigand Oaxaca: Jink for Jank

Today we're playing Brigand Oaxaca, a strange odyssey through a kitchen sink post apocalypse set in a place few can pronounce, with demons, ninjas, pirates, and juicers. An immersive sim styled highly difficult RPG made by one man over ten years in Darkbasic, it's janky, more than half broken, and weirdly charming when it's not being infuriating, sold on the idea that you will "die a lot, and you'll like it." Does that stand up? We'll see.

This video is a review, analysis, critique, and a bloody travel log.

I did not add a banana to the cell. I don't know why that banana was in that cell, but I have to sleep.

“Oh hey another weird 90’s game” “2017 immersive sim” “OH. *OH GOD*”

Props for using the Intimidate ability on the Polyphonic cribber.
  • @BrianLancaster
Thanks for the Gaozhong/rowboat bug, man. Still watching.
  • im severely impressed that the sole driving force of this game's development is an exorbitant amount of weed and alcohol
  • @Teegii4
Making a melee character then using mostly guns seems oddly fitting for Render Erroneous's personality
  • This man really made Mexican Morrowind to the point that he overworked himself and got high during development, just like Bethesda themselves did.

Mijo in Spanish: "My son" Mijo in Brazilian Portuguese: "Piss"

stabby man stabbing people with bullets at very high speed

This is like someone woke up with an artistic vision for a glorious statue, but had no idea how to make a statue, so he cobbled it together as best he could with nothing but scrap metal and scotch tape and by god you have to admire the fact that it exists.
  • Brian needs to be given a creative director position at the head of a talented and skilled development team with a shotgun to enforce his vision. I don't want this man making another game himself, but I want to see all his crazy visions become a reality.
  • @McBanditHope
I want to give this man Red Dead 2's budget and see what he comes up with.

Bought it instantly, my 14 hours with this game were utterly memorable.

I started playing this recently and your descriptions of it are DEAD ON. I was kind of confused by lines like "the mouse wheel is unresponsive, and the e and q keys are far too responsive" or "the controls cap your reactions, and the enemies are slightly faster than that cap", but they describe it PERFECTLY. I've already softlocked myself, and Brian's already hard at work fixing it, so I think I'm in for a good time. Thanks for playing a melee and charisma build so I don't have to lol.
  • @Tremuoso
Had to pause the video and rewind to make sure I heard correctly when you said this was a 2017 game.
  • I come back to this video roughly every 6 months, it's my single favorite of your videos (tied w the Playing Yakuza Series). Thanks for a real amount of effort. care. and love into this collection of 'hard work.' Also, I love Brian. out of all of the "superstar" devs he is hands down, the least famous and therefore the more badass
  • @GrodyPineman
This game and its development story are so utterly fascinating, thanks for the rundown.
