A Stitch in Time Tutorial: How I Knit a Traditional Heel Flap and Gusset on a Topdown Sock

Publicado 2017-03-30
I put together this tutorial for the benefit of some of my podcast viewers who are just beginning to knit socks and are interested in learning how to knit a traditional topdown heel flap and gusset sock. I walk you through the steps of knitting a heel flap, turning a heel, picking up stitches along the heel flap to avoid gaps, and decreasing the gusset stitches. I am NOT a professional instructor or videographer so please bear with the amateur production value.

Of the many, many videos I have watched, yours has actually taught me how to make a sock. I just could not wrap my brain around the other examples. Your calm voice and perfect close up stitching did the trick. I thank you from my 65 yr old heart. I've only made scarves when I was in my 20's. This is something I have always wanted to accomplish. For anyone out there thinking you can't knit a sock, just watch this video! Thank you, thank you so very much!!!

Best instructional video I’ve ever seen. Video is clear and up close.

I am enjoying your video, now if I can get my brain to compute I will be happy 😃 I am 85 yrs young, so that makes the difference, but I will keep trying, 🙏🏻 thank you 😊

You did an awesome job! I feel there’s only one other channel that did as good as you but yours made more sense to me. I have probably watched 25 videos on how to make heels. Peasant heel, tomato, heel flap, afterthought and I always steered clear of the flap method. Plus, you knit English! I would love to be able to knit continential but it’s going to take many more hours and I’ll wait until I have a long plain knit/purl project. I love the little special hints you’ve put in and your explanation is through and nice and slow. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you for an informative video. I’ve never tried the first row purling the heel flap. Seems so logical. I’ve also always knit one row after picking up the stitches plain with no decreases and then started decreasing on the second row after the picked up stitches. I managed not to have any gaps or ‘holes’ at the start of the instep. I’m Irish and knit English style. I follow all your videos for a few years now and love them. Marie

Hi, your tutorial is very informative. I knit continental style and keep the yarn back also while making the purl stitches. With your help I do not need to worry about where to keep my yarn. You are a treasure! Thank you.

I started my first ever sock today with the help of your video, so grateful to you, the best sock video around, clear, concise and brilliant for a non knitter..... Just remember it was you that helped me along the way, it has been on my mind for some time to start this project but I had to complete two double bed throws and several cushion covers for friends, this is my time now, thank you.
