In the Commissioner's Cup, NBA veteran Chris King became a replacement in time for the semis of the tournament. Gordon's met sister-team San Miguel in an elimination semifinal match. It was a true classic game that went to double overtime. The Boars were down by five in the dying seconds of regulation then came back to tie the game and win it double overtime period.

Once again, maraming salamat sa pag-share. In retrospect, Olsen Racela's miss gave Gordon's Gin the chance to push to 2nd OT, to win sudden death all the way to the championship. Five years later, the same Olsen Racela missed crucial FTs that would clinched the game against South Korea to a guaranteed silver in 2002 Busan Asiad. He should learn the lesson from the 1997 loss, but history repeats itself. The misses didn't take away as one of SMB's greatest PGs, but he could have a more special and memorable career if he made these clutch FTs. As for Gordon's Gin, this is the only championship (plus two runner ups) that they have in the Marlou Aquino era.
