Is this the toughest job on earth? Working outside, all day, in the coldest place on earth. The city of Yakutsk, Russia, where temperatures can fall to -81°F, -63°C. Sounds like torture right? Well, this is just life for so many in the World's coldest city and the remote arctic region of Yakutia, Siberia. But how do they survive outside all day in the harsh winter temperatures. The cold here in Yakutsk can be unforgiving and the market sellers here have to take unique & drastic precautions every single day just to head to work in the market and make some money. But how do they do it? What makes these hardy people so special? Well, lets head to Yakutsk central market, spend some time with these people, and find out!

Refrigerators in Yakutsk are needed to keep ice cream warm. 😅😅

I lived in Colorado, USA for many years and worked as a television videographer. Here's my hint for your camera, wrap it with something that will also hold a hand warmer. My cameras came with a cover that looked like a yellow rain slicker. I padded the cover, and put the hand warmer under the battery. I could work all day at -20F, when my competitors were at home sipping cocoa (but not getting paid).

The locals you met have a very pleasent disposition about the considering the conditions they live in. The market traders working outside in those terperatures were amazing. I think you could do a summer revisit to Yakutsk as a comparison of their lifestyle between the seasons.
  • This creak of snow indicates that the frost is very strong. You are such a wonderful couple that even no cold will scare you. Greetings from Western Siberia 👋

I don't know why, but this video has so much genuine vibes that I can't stop smiling while watching it. I can't believe that there's a place this extreme on earth but the people are so positive about it. I also love the long cut editing that just let things reveal themselves. You guys are wonderful vloggers. Cheers!
  • Really interesting. I just can't imagine dealing with that level of COLD! I live in upstate NY/USA. We can get really brutal weather, nothing compares to Yakutsk. What hearty people they must be!
  • @tricsike
Awesome video again. Me and my wife were watching a video from you guys about Montenegro and decided to go there this summer. We love your videos and it’s always interesting Please tell me how Matt was able to learn Russian so good. My wife is born in Canada and I’m originally from Hungary. I had to learn Russian in school and still understand a little bit. But knowing how hard to learn Hungarian for my wife I’m amazed Matt’s Russian. So happy to watch a new video from you guys and Julia laughs makes me smile always. Wishing both of you the very best ❤ 🇷🇺 ❤

Living Alaska I now feel like this is the banana belt by comparison.

My fear and hatred for any climatic condition colder than 0 degrees C means I'd never willingly go to such a brutally cold place, but, what an incredible adventure you two had! And this town is so picturesque in a wintry way; extraordinary!
  • @lroche3262
I could not stay in such place for very long. I got depressed only by watching it. People there are ready for a spacial mission in Uranus or Pluto.
  • Wow! You two are like a little Natonal Geographic program! Yakutsk is beautiful in winter. I had no idea about the fog - it makes the landscape a bit mysterious. I loved what the lady said - that people live in hot climates and she lives in the cold and to her, it's normal. It's so wonderful that you both can speak the language, especially because there are lots of people who don't speak English and you can speak to them about their lives. Well done. Very well done. I loved this video. Love to you both, Suzi.
  • Me, living in Minnesota in the states, the one place in the world I would love winter boots from is Yakutsk. I can only imagine how awesome they are.
  • It was good to see and hear your voices. It makes me appreciate that all people are truly one as a world. It is fascinating to see how people live in different cultures and thrive. Thank you!
  • @bethp3320
I love Julia’s Russian accent with an English twist. Also Yakutsk is at the top of my list of places to visit, thank you for sharing.
  • @SuperRab1690
What a lovely couple, and what a lucky man you are Matt, your missus is such a ray of sunshine
  • @gregmuon
I would have been tempted to ask, "Excuse me, where is the frozen food section?"
  • @nixmor5333
My goodness, this trip is extreme. Quite frankly I was so worried about you guys being out there so long since I saw a video once where they said when it was that cold people should not be out there longer than 15 to 20 minutes for the fear of frostbite setting in. Glad to see you were okay though. Truly you two are the quintessential adventurers.
  • @freeplace5243
Here where I live, we are experiencing one of the mildest winters in a long time and in contrast Yakutsk could be on another world. The people there have adapted so well to the adverse conditions it is impressive. What an experience! Matt and Julia, all the best!

Thank you! I enjoyed this so much. I’ve read a lot about Siberia and always been fascinated with remote places. I am 50 years old and hope to finally one day travel on the Transiberian Railway. I watched the video of you guys traveling by train. Also, my son’s father is Russian and lived 200 km east of Abakan on a river. I never unfortunately had the opportunity to travel to Siberia. My son also never has. But hopefully one day, somehow. My son and I live in Latvia. Have you ever been? There are plenty of Russians here so language won’t be a problem. Anyway, I liked the way you highlighted the friendliness of the people. I was so pleased to see that. A human connection is most important. Also the connection with nature. So thx again! I look foreward to the next remote spot!! Live, love and laugh🌏🤗🌻
