I don't think the WNBA WANTED to become successful. It was an Old Girls club. They had their fans, they got paid (not enough) and they didn't have the scrutiny they do now. Now CC shows up, and the eyes of literally the world are on the WNBA and women's basketball. Do you think Team USA has EVER been questioned on their picks? It's an invite only girl's trip. How dare anyone expect them to take a player not expressly invited. The WNBA, influencing the media, has tried to shut the hoopla around CC down.
