So, there’s been a lot of talk as of late about the idea of “superhero fatigue.”

With movies like Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Shazam: Fury of the Gods underperforming at the box office, a lot of people have been concerned that general audiences may have moved on from costumed heroes. But I don’t know if that’s really the case.

It’s something that I’ve been thinking about for a while, and while there’s definitely some shift happening, I think that it’s more complicated than just “people are tired of superheroes now.” I think it has more to do with the filmmaking standard, and after 2022 in blockbusters with Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Nope, even Matt Reeve’s The Batman, audiences are asking for more when it comes to blockbusters and superhero media.

I don't think people are sick of superhero movies I just think people are sick of bad movies
  • @BrendanJSmith
We're not tired of superheroes in general. We're tired of Disney and by extension Marvel's assembly line approach to filmmaking. Nothing feels personal anymore.

The one thing I liked about James Gunn’s DC pitch was that he mentioned how creatives come in talking about “I wanna do something ambitious” then the end product is something so “safe” you can tell the studio meddled with everything… so to see that he’s focusing on the more introspective comics as reference - - is as ambitious as it gets - fills me with hope that this DCU will go crazy.
  • I’m still excited for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
  • Jay Bauman said it best; “The fatigue only sets in when the movies are lame”
  • @Robbity
See I think Guardians 3 definitely disproved the “people are tired of superhero movies”. That movie is killing it financially and critically. I think they are just sick of sloppily put together like Quantumania.
  • My biggest issue with superhero movies at the moment is that they’re more focused on the wider story rather than the characters. I loved the Netflix shows because they didn’t feel like they were building towards anything. Sure, they were working towards The Hand, but even still they focused more on the characters. The Batman… built towards NOTHING. Just hinted at some stuff to come. Absolutely fantastic movie. The winter soldier, while still building towards the bigger story, focused more on characters, and that movie was at the top of my MCU ranking for a while
  • Honestly you hit the nail on the head with it It's not a fatigue of Superheroes themselves it's a fatigue of them constantly getting shoved into mediocre movies Also I'd love for you to cover more video game stuff
  • @IcyDiamond
Finally someone else noticed that every single Marvel movie since phase 4 has had one of the villains redeemed, I thought I was the only one who noticed that!
  • I’m not tired of superhero movies. I’m just tired of the ones we’ve been getting.
  • People have been talking about "Superhero fatigue" for like a decade now. I think if superhero movies were more focused on the individual stories they can tell rather than the universe, I think people wouldn't be as critical about the "superhero genre"
  • @jhunterl98
the camera zooms on your superhero stuff were inspired
  • @nerdgeekman
This is why I’m glad The Boys and Invincible exist. They both take a different turn on comic book media and they’re both highly accessible unlike the MCU where you have to watch one thing in order to understand the other.
  • @jdogisgoated
I'm not tired of superheroes so much as I'm tired of the connected universe stuff. You can have characters like Spider-Man exist in a world where Iron Man and Hulk also exist without making them team up every movie or set up three other movies/shows.
  • People aren’t tired of Superhero movies, they’re tired of movies that are essentially treated like sitcom episodes. It’s actually so refreshing seeing a movie that IS the project. Like it’s so rare for a single film to be something that everyone involved seems to truly care about and not just part of the job

James gunn said he's giving directors of his DC universe more creative freedom so I say in terms of variety, superhero movies may have a brighter future
  • @undeadbean207
We need to see more superhero films like Werewolf by Night, not just in the horror sense (although that would be nice), but with unique styles of filming, writing, acting, etc. Like you said, not every movie needs to be an action/comedy with the virtually same plot.
  • @MrReset94
The issue is not the "Cinematic Universe", but rather the idea that everything that's part of it needs to be made in the exact same way. Give directors freedom to do the movie they want (hire good ones, and good writers) and just find the way to tie this diverse movies together through the general arc and the shared world, rather than style and tropes.

Barry from HBO needs more coverage honestly. It deserves more appreciation than it gets . A Must see show!
