I work at top golf and the balls are lighter so they don't go as far. Also, It's really great hearing that you guys loved being guests!!

When I worked at TopGolf I was told by some of the mechanics their that each ball is identified at the dispense machine in each bay. When the ball goes inside the target, there are fields that communicate the area in which the ball landed to your bays display. At most TopGolf’s, the balls are collected, washed, and then returned back through the system to each bay in the facility. The balls are designed not to go as far and be as accurate as a “real” golf ball. Haha they have to make it challenging somehow and avoid golfers who have the ability to hit balls outside the netted area not from doing so. Fun fact! The first 3 TopGolf’s started in the UK despite being headquartered in Dallas! Also! TopGolf originally did not have machines to dispense balls at their locations, you had to get balls just like every other driving range. Great video!

I helped install the 2nd Top Golf in the US (Alexandria VA). It was a very interesting process and I learned a lot about how the entire system works. Essentially, each ball has a unique ID. When you purchase the golf balls, it tells the computer system that this unique ID now belongs to you. After hitting the ball, if it lands in one of the circular catch zones, it will fall down into a grid of nets. Each net has a scanner that will scan the ball and send that information to your platform/screen. All other functions of the fairway are like traditional golf ranges (retrieving the golf balls, cleaning them and recycling them back into the system.
