"Never wake a sleeping baby" is age-old advice that we've all heard at some point. And when you've been struggling to get your baby to sleep, waking them seems like something you would never, ever, want to do.

But sometimes it's actually better to wake your baby. In some cases it's for safety reasons, and in some cases it leads to improved sleep and a more predictable sleep schedule.

In this video you'll learn when you should wake your baby and why it can be a good thing.

As always, I hope this makes your life as a parent a little easier, and helps you and your baby get some more much-needed rest.

You literally saved my baby ma'am.. He has the habit of falling asleep in car seat and pram. Thank you ma'am God bless you

I always find myself justifying to my mum and MIL that i have to take my 2 month old out of the car seat at the end of a journey. They dont quite understand the reason why i bought one that isnt a combo system (seat stays in car, baby goes into pram) but i know that from watching your videos, her safety is most important over her staying asleep.

When I was a child, my 5mo cousin died of positional asphyxiation. My aunt and uncle were with him and their older child at Disneyland, and he was happy in the stroller all morning, and fell asleep early in the day. They didn't notice anything was wrong until they went to check on him closely after he had only been asleep in the stroller, for half an hour at most, and he was blue. He was already dead by the time they even noticed anything was wrong, even though they were literally watching him sleep. When I was a kid I was only told what happened was called sids, and that babies just sometimes stop breathing. I didn't know about positional asphyxiation until your videos, and honestly learning about it makes me wonder why this isn't like, the first thing they tell new parents!! Honestly I think the carseat-to-stroller contraptions should be illegal, for encouraging such risk.

My babies only sleep in my hands. It is hard. But I know this time flies so fast I actually enjoy it.
  • This really makes sense and thank you very much for wanting to share 😊

My baby only naps for 30 minutes multiple times throughout the day and nap 10 mins at night and fuss and cry and keep doing this till 4 am. She also wont stay awake longer than an hour and a half during the day but at night she stays awake for 3-4 hours. I am losing my mind.

OMG!!! We’ve been struggling with putting our baby(4,5 month old) to sleep for the last month or so - she would show tired cues but as soon as I tried putting her to sleep she would start fussing and scream more and more. I tried to keep her up for 2,5 hours after the last nap for the last 2 days and she fell asleep with minimal fuss!!! Thank you ❤️

"Wake your baby up and expose them to sunlight!" cries in winter

Thanks for this content, Emma. As an expecting mom, this really helps.
  • Our oldest was left in a swing a lot of the time and caused the muscles in his neck to develop incorrectly, causing for bad posture in his neck and arms. Luckily it was reversible after about a month or so of stretches and physical therapy
  • Thanks for the excellent advice, again! We struggled so much with my son's sleep and learned all of this by trial and error. Had a bit of a laugh at #4 - I live in central Canada and sunrise at winter solstice is almost 9 am! Definitely not getting any sunlight when we start the day, haha!
  • @madi32
Ah, sunshine! If only! The sun's not rising before 9am right now, and it does so only behind thick rain clouds. Very interesting and potentially life saving video, thank you very much!

As a Newborn Care Specialist, I love your videos ❤
  • Seeing all the adorable sleeping babies made this video worth watching, regardless of the content lol
  • Yes. I ALWAYS move her to safe space. It isn't worth the risk. This means less sleep for me😂😂😂😂 but oh well. My anxiety wont let me leave her in the carseat.
