A national anthem is a big part of a country's identity - it unites its people into one tune, one common sense of belonging and brotherhood. While every national anthem does that, the specifics about which emotion it uses to stir partriotism, what kind of emotion it uses and what words it picks are all dependent on a country's history and macro-psychology.

In this video, I re-create a project by Lucas de Sa where I use K-Means clustering, an unsupervised learning algorithm to automatically classify all the national anthems of the world into five different groups.

In the process we go through the alleys of data science, psychology and music - a cocktail of the many topics of interest you will find on India in Pixels.

I am Indian but whenever I listen "আমার সোনার বাংলা " I have goosebumps.. More so as I am living in Maharastra, far away from my hometown in Bengal.
  • As an Indian Bengali, I felt emotional listening to Aamar sonar bangla. There have been many instances too when I started crying while singing Jana Gana Mana, national anthems really pull out the patriot in our hearts
  • I think we Bengalis like to call our homeland mother . Not only the case of Bangladesh we also address India as "Bharat mata" in most Bengali patriotic songs. For example "Vandemataram". Bharat matar joy🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

Fun fact: the Greek 🇬🇷 anthem is the longest in the world, it takes like 50 minutes to sing all of it😉

13:33 France's national anthem is about the French Revolution. Fighting against the Royals and the aristocrats For rights, and freedom. The lyrics are about the fight at the Bastille where they claimed glory
  • If you observe... in the whole video he didn't play Indian national anthem, because it can't stop it in between like he did with other nation's anthem, here is Indian. Respect 🙏

I am a Bengali and I don't know why but whenever I hear both my national anthem and Bangladesh national anthem I get goosebumps. The meaning in those songs just made me tear up.

The anthem of Bangladesh, indicates the both west Bengal(present day Bengal, India) & east Bengal(present day Bangladesh) we Bengali's are divided by borders, but we are United by our language and it's culture. We are very fortunate to have great men like Rabindranath Thakur. 🙏

Hi ! I'm Rohan from Nepal. I love your videos and how you shed light on the cultures of the Indian subcontinent. Just a slight correction on the mechi mahakali thing though: Mechi/Mahakali are the east-west demarcation of the border of Nepal rather than plains and Himalayas. Keep up the good work and also I love your narration 😊

"Amar Sonar Bangla" is even sung in our Bengal. It instills so much patriotism. But I guarantee, there are far far more patriotic songs than it in Bengali(we Bengalis went through a lot, and such songs testify to our hard times)
  • Just hearing the tune of আমার সোনার বাংলা, I teared up. I didn't expect that! Love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩❤❤❤❤

as a non bengali (meitei) from tripura who understands the bengali language trust me the bangladeshi anthem makes me feel emotional ... and my bengali friends feel an immediate connection as soon as they hear it .
  • Here is the anthem of my country (Barbados). I couldn't find it on the map (#SIDSproblems 😢) but I have a feeling it got clustered into green based on the description. :: It begins with a sort of backstory talking about "our forefathers", and how throughout history they worked towards the country's independence, which was when the song would have been made. In plenty and in time of need, when this fair land was young, Our brave forefathers sowed the seed, From which our pride is sprung :: The next portion becomes more boisterous, emphasizing "pride", before mellowing out, and details what the country is proud of: previous accomplishments, overcoming great challenges as well as its ability to be its own nation and self-govern. It also states that that pride is what unites persons in the country. A pride that makes no wanton boast of what it has withstood, That binds our hearts from coast to coast, A pride of nationhood! :: The next part begins the chorus and is the most boisterous. Further, it is essentially a stern declaration of the country's independence. We loyal sons and daughters all do hereby make it known, These fields and hills beyond recall are now our very own :: The final part returns to low and mellow but serves as a promise each citizen makes. In the country today, this mentality is seen as perhaps an obligation stemming from the aforementioned pride, and a duty in honour of those that have come before. It all boils down to stepping up and changing the world. It's a pledge to 1) remember and protect the memory of the past, and 2) be bold and unwavering in determining the future. We write our names on history's page, With expectations great, Strict guardians of our heritage, Firm craftsmen of our fate. I think this song explains a lot about Barbadian culture, including how the country approaches foreign policy. Barbados prides itself in making waves and being a little leader on the global stage. This is also expressed by the country's motto "Pride and Industry"

This was so awesome - and moreso the narration with a slight ouch of humor!!!! Loved this video and of course the small course in programming was just right in duration and content such as not to bore and keep to the context. Brilliantly done!!!
