(Almost) Total Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024 - 95% Totality - Altoona, Pennsylvania, USA

Published 2024-04-08
Where were you during the Great American Eclipse of April 8, 2024? Did you get to see it? How was the weather?

For me, this was something I'd been looking forward to for years. After the solar eclipse in 2017, which was 78% here, I was excited for this one and to watch it with family. The 2024 eclipse was one thing I was looking forward to after my mom died that was the one thing I was excited for. The weather is almost a play for play repeat of the 2017 eclipse. Clouds and sun, but after the overcast skies predicted, I was happy to see breaks in the clouds. I had planned to film it continually and make it a time lapse that way, but with the clouds passing over, that meant I had to keep moving the camera around. It unfortunately also meant with it being zoomed in so much that the camera was jostling much more than I'd intended. Hence, the "shaky cam" at times.

IMPORTANT: Whenever you watch a solar eclipse, DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN WITHOUT ECLIPSE GLASSES, no matter how tempted you may be. It's still the sun and can damage your eyes. Only during absolute totality, when the sun completely is covered by the moon, can you remove your glasses to observe the strangeness and wonder of the solar eclipse. But be sure to put them back on before Bailey's Beads give your eyeballs a nasty surprise!

I had initially debated on making the trip to Erie, but given that it was cloudy there, I'm glad I stayed behind to see this. 95% was still really cool for me. I was blown away by how dark it got and how weird the sky looked. The bit at the end showing how everything looks doesn't do justice to how much darker it was than a normal sunny day (don't forget a camera adjusts light levels). I also had a smart idea to use an extra pair of eclipse glasses on my camera. While technically, it is a partial eclipse, it's much deeper than a standard partial solar eclipse, being extremely close to totality, 95.3% here.

I was inspired to use this music by a World War Two video, the first two songs used I felt would be absolutely perfect if I can film it, which I did!

If you look closely (or slow down the footage, again apologies for the jostling due to the intermittent cloud cover and having to reposition the camera due to the zooming in), you can see the corona of the sun on the corners of the crescent due to it being almost totality. But it's just a very small spot. As cool as the lunar eclipse videos were, this was ten times cooler. Hopefully you too think my solar eclipse video was fun. As always, I appreciate your viewership! If my YouTube channel is still around in 2045, I promise to travel to the path of totality to give you something even better!

  • Of all the eclipse videos, I think yours is the best. I also saw 95% here in Massachusetts and this perfectly captures the feel of seeing a total eclipse (or in our case, an almost total eclipse). This is so incredible, I actually started getting emotional during the first part because of the music, it's so calm yet somber, then the second song is intense. I love the ending of it as well.
