A review/video essay of season 1 of the new Star Wars show Ahsoka. I go into the many flaws and strengths about the show and why it's primarily decent. Former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

Man, one thing I hate about the show is how Ray Stevenson will never get to see how much love his character and performance is getting
  • The truth is that Ahsoka's writing problems are usually present in most of Filoni's work. it's just that in animation (and in the childish nature of most of rebels) this is overlooked. The other main problem is that Filoni is not as prepared to handle live action as he is with animation

I don't think this show is terrible but there's something so weird about how Ahsoka was so much more interesting in the Clone Wars and Rebels than she is in her own show, her relationship with Anakin was so much more natural and alive in the Clone Wars than in this, and she had a lot more personality in that as well
  • The worst thing about the show for me was how they showed relationships between the characters for example how ezra acted when he saw sabine, my dude was stranded in a different galaxy for years and the only people he knows/ can understand are trying to kill him and then when he finally sees not only a person he knows from his home but his goddamn sister/crush (idk) he acts like she found him in a big hide and seek game.

Honest to god opinion, the actress who played Sabine felt like a theater kid. She made captain marvel look charismatic. Being smug and never showing emotion doesn’t make you a strong powerful woman.

People get chills over the Anakin scenes not because of a love of star wars, but because of nostalgia and love for the old star wars. Many of us grew up watching Hayden Christensen as Anakin in the prequels, seeing him reprise his role as the chosen one in such a glorious way is why those scenes are the highlight of Ahsoka. I'm glad I watched it, it was alright and I agree with you about everything else, but the reason I watched it was because I'd seen spoilers of the Anakin cameos.

Another thing I’ll add that I’ve seen elsewhere. Dave Filoni seems to be the heir to Lucas in that, he has these interesting stories, characters and ideas, BUT leaving him alone to develop stuff doesn’t work out as well as it could. Just like how the prequels had a great overarching story with flashes of greatness, they also had huge issues with dialogue and character growth. Filoni probably has the potential to make one of the best Star Wars series/ films but that is only going to happen if the Disney execs force him to work with some competent writers who can talk him down from the worse aspects of his writing and direction. There’s a reason Clone Wars and Rebels are loved and hated. We love to remember the highs of each show, but we also tend to forget that a lot of the episodes are just flat out bad. That’s fine when you have 80 episodes to work with. It’s a huge gamble with 8 episodes or a single film.

The show completely destroyed Thrawn as a credible threat. "oh, they're down on the planet? Send in the two sacrificial fighters against the jedi, that'll definitely work out. Hmm, yes, they've been destroyed, just as expected, I am a master strategist. Okay, now that they're getting away, lets start shooting them with the big guns."

There isn't a single lightsaber fight in the original trilogy that didn't have tremendous consequences for the story and characters. Obi-Wan gets killed, Luke gets his hand chopped off and Vader reveals his identity, Palpatine temps Luke into killing Vader and taking his place... Here in this show it's just used as filler to give the illusion of tension even though we know the characters are scheduled for five more spin-offs or something.
  • @MaurDL
So it's a show that feels simultaneously slow and rushed? That's kind of impressive.

1:46 Marrok crying In corner after everyone forgot about him when he wasnt anyone we knew
  • My main problem is how they butchered Hera, Sabine and Ahsoka. Hera goes from leader and admiral to being the most corrupt general in the galaxy. Sabine constantly has that arrogant smirk on her face and just seems dumb in general while in rebels she was the smartest of the group also why is she almost never wearing her helmet? And Ahsoka just doesn't have a personality and is just there to have some lightsaber fights. Like seriously, remove her from the show and it just removes some fights
  • @burtreynolds8030
I like you’re take but unfortunately I think the flaws bring it far below decent, you’re first point is that there is no stakes, what is an action piece without stakes?
  • Ngl the lightsaber fight choreography is shitty, gotta love it when you start spinning in front of your enemy and they don't slash you in the back on top of ahsoka not killing baylon when she had countless opportunities to do so during their second fight

I just wish Sabine wasn’t so strong in the force in the finale, was hoping her Jedi training was a “be a better person” thing. But in the finale she goes from youngling to Jedi Knight; I’m glad it was built up but her being force sensitive at all kinda ruins my perception of her in Rebels
  • @YodaOnABender
I swear all disney has to do is dangle stuff from the clone wars in front of our faces and twitter will claim it's the best thing since ROTS
  • @JCShadow0202
I disagree with you on Thrawn, compared to his book or even Rebels counterpart, he’s comes off extremely underwhelming. If it wasn’t for plot armor he would’ve killed off the entire cast and crab people in episode 7
  • @DarthDevorin
I didn't ask for a masterpiece. I asked to be entertained. I've seen low budget Star Wars fan films with more heart than this show.
  • @Andolin414
Ray Stevenson was awesome. I’m still mad at Taika Waititi for giving him the lamest death scene ever.

a lot of people don't know that George Lucas was the main creator of the Clone Wars animated show, more people should watch that, it has a lot of average episodes but in general it gets so good as it goes on and it adds so much context and so much life to a lot of what happens in the Prequels
