Opportunity Gap | ADHD parenting tips from a Black clinical psychologist

Published 2022-07-20
What should families of color know about ADHD? The podcast welcomes Kristin Carothers, PhD, a Black clinical psychologist who specializes in working with families of kids who have ADHD and learning differences.

“Dr. Kristin” shares why ADHD — and ADHD medication — hold such a heavy place in the hearts of Black families. The discussion focuses on the cultural conversation around ADHD. Dr. Kristin also gives practical tips to families on what they can do if they think a child might have ADHD. And she offers strategies for families who don’t have resources or health insurance to get professional help. Finally, she reflects on Black Lives Matter and her personal experience of being a Black doctor.

  • I live in Jamaica and my son has this and it's very difficult as our system doesn't look out for these kids so they are undiagnosed or in my case self diagnosed and I have to end up doing my research to help my son. I'm glad I found this platform..🥰

Great information and needed. Just a reminder that nurse practitioners, in particular psychiatric nurse practitioners, family nurse practitioners, pediatric nurse practitioners, and physician assistants under the care of an MD, can also prescribe and diagnose ADHD. Over 20 states in the US allow nurse practitioners autonomous practice. I would love to hear about the overdiagnosis of Oppositional defiant disorder in minority youth as well. Keep up the great work
