What Living Conditions Are Like For Syrian Refugees In Berlin: VICE News Tonight on HBO

“There is no proper housing, no good life,” a Syrian refugee named Farouk told VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson in Berlin. “There is no good food, no work. Some people have to wait for a year to start learning German. People say it’s our fault, no.”

When the migrant crisis began to overwhelm Europe last year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood out for her insistence on opening the country to newcomers. More than a million refugees moved in, and now Merkel’s popularity is waning.

“Our rooms are very cramped,” Farouk said. “No money, nothing that we can build a life with. There is nothing that gives us hope for tomorrow.”

This segment originally aired Nov. 14, 2016, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.

  • @maanandoo
2:15 this guy is an Egyptian (speaks in Egyptian dialect) he probably entered Germany pretending to be a Syrian and he is complaining -.- ... im also Egyptian this is pathetic.

These refugees remind me of my teenage self long ago. Entitled, undisciplined, ungrateful, unmotivated, and poor. Glad I changed for the better.
  • @roaring_toots
"please just give me a ticket home", its absolutely incredible how they managed to afford to pay smugglers to come here, walk thousands of kilometers yet when it comes to going back they need tickets provided.
  • @domagcommow
I don't understand why people are surprised that the conditions are like this for refugees or the fact that now the asylum process is taking longer. Do you really think that any country is really prepared for such an influx of people like Europe is seeing. No, of course not.
  • @TP-mv6en
Imagine coming from Syria and then complaining about the conditions in Germany 🤦‍♂️
  • @nabilsaid
why an Egyptian (the 3rd guy) is a refugee in Germany ?? I didn't know that there is a war going on in Egypt !!!
  • @pukurin5125
Repeat after me: "The German taxpayer does NOT owe me anything. The German taxpayer does not benefit from my presence in Germany. I should be GRATEFUL to not be in a war-zone. If I am ungrateful or unsatisfied, I will go back to my country, and leave Europe alone."
  • Why do you have to wait a year to start learning German? You can't get some German books and learn on your own and then practice with the local Germans? Is that harder that having to gesture like courage the cowardly dog whenever you want something?
  • @rperez3883
oh the irony....they flee their homeland then are upset they aren't given more.
  • @RAD136

I (german) have many friends who had many problems finding apartments in Berlin to live. There is no space for more.
