OneShot lost something on Consoles (World Machine Edition)

OneShot World Machine Edition is an expanded and polished upgrade of the excellent RPG Maker game. It wormed it's way under my skin and poked a million holes in my heart just like it's PC version did.

There is no combat, only puzzles and great dialogue. Removing yourself from the story mid playthrough is akin to waking up from a good dream, and feeling like you've just been disconnected from something deeply personal and profound. The main character Niko has a naive optimism in a cold mechanical world that isn't just welcome... it's sorely needed for the defeated citizens of this land. Answers aren't given in abundance here and when they are they usually come with a big caveat or devastating cost. Despite having seen this journey beginning to end prior to my time with the World Machine Edition.. there were a couple of curve balls the console version of OneShot threw at me that caught me off guard. I played this on the Switch and was surprised at the ways the developers altered the game to fit it's new environment. I loved my time with it... yet despite that... there is something lost in this version of the game. A magical component that cannot be replicated outside of it's original release.

My video before this didn't do too well so a like and subscription go a long way in helping me grow. Thanks so much to the publisher for the review copy :)
  • [Spoilers don't read if you haven't played OneShot yet] I'd say the main difference between world machine and computer is that with computer, some of the things are just so much more surprising and interesting. It would just never be able to replicate the chills I got when the game said my own name, or when it changed my wall paper when I wasn't looking. World machine is probably really good but if you had to chose, probably go for the PC version.
  • [SPOILERS!] the PC version was so immersive. the game changed my background without me realizing, and called me by name. I had to look for the secrets within my own computer files. It was one of the best game experiences I've ever had

I 100% agree. It's something that is definitely recommended to try out if you're a fan or don't have a pc. But, the datchment of it utilizing the 4th wall breaking on your actual pc os is without a doubt is a downgrade that unfortunately had to happen. You just can't replicate that same experience that you get on pc.
  • I think while the Steam version is the best way to experience OneShot for the first time, TWM Edition is great for any replaythroughs since you already know all the surprises and the new content and diagonal walking is nice.

God , don't scare me like that . I was thinking that this game would be a bitter failure . Good to know that is not the case but man you know how to make people intrested .

Honestly addicted to niko and this world so i would gladly replay it
  • this concept of creating fake pc’s to make 4th wall breaks and meta puzzles work was a thing they did with the ns version of DDLC too. Pretty good workaround for people who don’t have pc’s that can run those game or don’t have pc’s in general
  • as much as i would love to play oneshot again, i dont think i ever will. pc or world machine edition, something about the concept of playing this game only one time is something i think will make me love the game more and more as my life goes by. i think thats what makes it so special. "for you, a story. like thousands of other stories. for niko, a dream. like thousands of other dreams." and amazing anaylsis!! your editing and writing alone ripped me right back into my memories of the game
  • I’m just glad there’s more content for this game. I also like the little bells and whistles they include, such as the beautiful wallpapers.
  • @Nintendogs08
I first played Oneshot when it first came out on the switch and I was still Really immersed in the game I don’t think it “lost” it’s charm in my opinion!

I think that the pc version is definitely better, however if this your only option to play the game, certainly do so. It’s a wonderful game that i really wish was more popular
  • @waffles6527
As much as it takes away from some of the awesome stuff the pc version does, I feel like this version also adds another layer of atmosphere that I really enjoyed. I like both around the same amount.

one-shot is a great game!! also that thumbnail is cute this khoo guy seems cool
  • @MeboDotExe
you definitely lose a lot of immersion with world machine but i do also like the extra content on the digital world machine itself, unlockable themes, wallpapers, music player, and of course the friend character cards
  • Imporant note and spoliers: It's possible to replay post-solstice but only the non-solstice runs. At the title screen there will be a .... option below the exit option. Clicking it will bring you to the world machine which will ask you if you want to play a recording of your run. Saying yes will bring you back to the start but Niko's texture is like that of the world machines reflection. Saying no will crash the game. Also you don't need to delete save file to replay post-solstice.

The way I see it, the console ports, with their new content and little collectibles, are meant for returning players, not as someone's first experience. After all, most computers should be able to run this with ease. I mean, I'm glad to support Nightmargin and the devs by buying the ports, but it's definitely not the best way to play OneShot.
  • @Neko.091
I can understand the lack of immersion making the game not as good as a whole, however the experience I get from the game is still unlike any other I've ever had, and I will never forget it.
  • @turtleman2370
I’ve only played this on switch and it was still an incredible experience
