A stirring rendition of the National Anthem by Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Vince Welnick at Candlestick Park on April 12, 1993. Even in the later years, they could still belt it out. ALSO: A never-before-noticed UFO flyby occurs at 2:11 in this video. Note the object's unusual green hue. (Perhaps certain aliens just wouldn't miss this rendition for the world--literally...!)

"How'd you get the Grateful Dead???" "We asked them."

As Jerry said, "Like old prostitutes and bad architecture, if you 're around long enough, you gain a certain amount of respectability."
  • I remember listening to the anouncer before the game saying that after Roseanne messed up the anthem the last thing that we needed was a bunch of drug infested burn outs to sing it . They went on to do one of the best most traditional versions ever

I remembered, when I was younger, hearing that the Dead were going to sing the anthem at Candlestick and I remember feeling weary about it...and I remember watching it and I can still remember getting goosebumps. It's the best rendition of the Anthem I've EVER heard at a live event. It's sung with such heart and beauty and harmonic bliss. And this is coming from somebody who is NOT a Dead fan at all. Beautifully performed, even now, years later. :) Thanks for the vid! :)

Vince Welnick was a hell of a singer!!

And that my friends is how you sing the National Anthem.

The harmony on "home of the brave" just breaks my heart because it reminds me so much of "Attics of My Life." When there were no ears to hear / you sang to me <3

I remember I was driving on I80 when The Dead started up the anthem. I had to pull over because I was crying. I'll never forget it.

I was there - scalped a ticket home opener. Third base line. Plenty of tie dies in the stands. Look at Coach Dusty Bakers big smile after they finish. It was a great day to not have a job.

Better than I expected... I mean really, it is hard to make this song sound musical. And the Boys have their vocal ups and downs. But they made me proud of my country and of them.

very cool arrangement: they all sing lead on the first verse, then Vince takes a high harmony on the 2nd verse while Jerry & Bob double the lead. and 3-part harmony from the bridge. LOVE IT.

Thanks for gettin this back up. The star spangled banner is one of the most difficult songs to sing. Thats why even usually competent singers mess it up big time. The Grateful Dead, have something more than most, and that is dynamic range. This is one of the most outstanding renditions of the national anthem, it gives me goose bumps. I love the Grateful Dead.

Just as sweet as I remembered it, watching the replay on the evening news. Brought a tear. RIP Jerry and Vince.
  • @bawmman
    best version National Anthem
  • @jeanhartely
Imagine.  This song is so hard to do that it took the Dead to carry it off!  Oh, do I miss you, Jerry!
  • O.K. Now I've seen everything!! When I die bury me deep. A pair of speakers a my feet. A pair of headphones on my head. and let me listen to the Grateful Dead. I mean first our boys are singing the National anthem. Despite years of a counter-culture life style. You scratch the surface and what do you find? Patriots !! And if that isn't enough, right behind the flag fly's a UFO. I told everyone that ET might just land at a Dead show one day. And we would just yawn and ask if they needed a miracle ticket. Thanks for uploading this gem. From Vienna. Peace.
