Just what I needed "your environment does not define you, it simply gives you the oppurtunity to find yourself."

When I was younger I always hated TED talks because they’d play them in school all the time. 15 now and I can’t stop watching. It’s amazing how much you can learn from these people. Props to this great guy for bringing such a great lesson to everyone.

"The strongest force in the human personality, is the need to remain consistent with how you define yourself."
  • I can't even process the dude's mentality. He's so high on the emotional maturity level.
  • "Freedom is a state of mind, and nobody can take that away from you" - more important than ever these days
  • Going through something right now and stumbled upon this. I cried during this talk from gratitude. This definitely hits different when you are weathering the storm. Peter Sage always comes through with the wisdom.

You have taught me to accept where I am in life today.
  • Your environment never defines you, it simply gives you the opportunity to define yourself. Wow
  • As soon as i was arrested i thought (Who i am and what i want is now irrelevant) I did not turn my self back on until the day i was released. Ashamed to say i was a Criminal that deserved it, but now proud to say i am not any more.

everything i needed to hear after years of panic attacks
  • Anyone who has read the famous book Think and Grow Rich knows that every adversity carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit. Peter’s inspiring story is a stunning example of how to apply this concept in the real world and turn an obstacle into an opportunity to help others! Bravo!
  • 14:58 "...the best trees don't grow in the best soil, they grow in the strongest winds. So if you want to be the best version of yourself, start praying for strong winds, and don't complain when they show up." I've heard that many people pray for patience...and then they proceed to go through situation after situation where their patience is pushed past their limit. As for myself (already knowing that about people who pray for patience), a few years back I prayed for strength. Guess what happened...I ended up going through situation after situation that was like those "strong winds", so that over and over again I have felt like I was pushed so hard that I was at my breaking point. (A few times, I did feel like I had been broken.) I still don't feel like I am strong-enough to bear the burdens in my life...but I'm stronger than I was before, stronger than I was months ago, stronger than I was years ago when I prayed for strength. It worked, but I had no idea what I was asking. This is a good analogy in the video. It clarified and gave me words for what I already realized had happened. Now I understand that when I prayed to be stronger, I was praying for "strong winds" to come, I was inviting change to come in my life. I don't like the wind...but I now know that I don't have to fear the wind or shrink back from it. ___ Another important tree analogy that I have learned from is from the Bible (Jeremiah 17:7-8) about being "like a tree planted by the water that extends its roots by a stream, and does not fear when the heat comes". Like how this presenter, Peter Sage, had a purpose in mind when he went into the prison, ... I think that it is important to know where your strength comes from. It matters that you know what you believe, and that no matter the circumstance, you can choose how you face it.

AMAZING talk, so very inspirational! (Best part? “I’ve never seen anybody so happy on their first day of prison!”)
  • @Gia_Java
This man is so powerful. THANK YOU!
  • Refreshing to have such profound principles taught through the lens of experience not theory. Seeing amazing results in my life having applied the principles mentioned in this ted talk. Thanks peter!

Thanks Peter. You are the real deal. There are only a few coaches outside who are able to walk the talk in those circumstances. You live what you teach and its a pleasure to have you as a teacher. Thanks again for this inspiring video. And btw I think it was a gift for the inmates to have you there.
