In the face of political and ideological divides between their respective countries, five years ago Daniel Barenboim, an Argentinean Jew and Israel’s most famous conductor and pianist, along with Christian Palestinian philosopher Edward Said, put together the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra.
Symbolically named after Goethe’s book of poems called West-Östlicher Divan, a synthesis of Islamic and European poetry published as the Napoleonic Wars drew to a close, the Orchestra comprises an equal number of young Israeli and Arab musicians aged between 13 and 26. For all its symbolism, and hopefully something rather more than that, the aims and ambitions of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra are first and foremost musical ones: the Middle East’s political divides are eschewed for a union of musical talent, which speaks volumes for cultural interaction. Once the music starts, that is what matters. And it mattered considerably at this concert, the orchestra’s members fresh from a residency in Seville – radiating learning and conviction, and sharing the wonderful power of music in no uncertain terms. In this live recording from a concert in the Victoria Hall in Geneva two familiar masterworks were presented with significant import, Beethoven’s 3rd piano concerto and Tchaikovsky's famous 5th Symphony. As an encore, we also hear the overture from Verdi's "La Forza del destino" and Jean Sibelius' "Valse triste".

How fortunate we are to live in an age when we can sit at home and see and participate in such a wonderful concert by an astoundingly talented orchestra led by one of the greatest of all conductors.

I notice that the performers seemed to have shed kilos of bodily fat (especially the maestro himself and his son the concertmaster, Michael ) after sweltering in the summer heat, throughout the duration of the concert. The piece de resistance was certainly Tchaikovsky’s eternal work, the 5th Symphony! It’s time Daniel Barenboim be awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace, having devoted a major part of his life to fostering the cause of peace & goodwill in the Middle East via the medium of music — truly an international language! You are an amazing man, maestro! May God bless you & this wonderful orchestra of beautiful young & talented people. Please come to Malaysia and play in our Dewan Fil!

Barenboim is the most vital and appropriate spokesman for peace Now! He always has taken the stance of balancing the needs of Palestinians and Israelis. What a wonderful gift this concert actually is! You can see the gratitude and devotion to Barenboim in their faces as they perform! Such wonderful young talent!

This performance in Geneva's Victoria Hall took place in 2004; Barenboim was 62 years old at the time, and his son Michael (1st violin in this concert) was merely 19 years old!

Never Thought Anyone Conduct this better then TOSCONINI Wonderful.
  • I'm 59 now and I grew up listening to Barenboim playing Mozart piano concertos and conducting various Mozart symphonies, both of which shall never be bettered. This concert displays his ultimate genius which is unparalleled as both conductor and pianist. There are many, many greats in the world of classical music, however, to me Daniel generally is the greatest of these 2 mediums that I have ever witnessed, his prowess is unequalled, not in everything he does, but on the whole. The man is the consumate genius of this genre and here he presents an extremely gifted orchestra of young players. This is such a joy from the meastro, God I love him!.

Barenboim does a fine job at pushing the orchestra to its limits, without putting aided pressure on them.

I get a special pleasure out of watching Daniel play and conduct. His dedication to peace and understanding through music and this orchestra especially is heroic. The emotional and intellectual pain they are all going through now in late '23 is so disheartening.

A nobel undertaking to promote peaceful international relationships, led by Maestro Barenboim, following in the footsteps of the great violinist and humanitarian, Sir Yehudi Menuin.

Cuanto dolor en estos días de guerra. Quienes hacen música para la paz y quienes creemos en ella, no lo merecemos .

In 1711, Bartolomeo Cristofori, a noted harpsichord maker of Tuscany, exhibited several “forte-pianos” in which the action was so constructed that the keys, when depressed, threw little leather-headed hammers, affixed to a bar above them, and this is Piano-Forte Now.Amazing instrument . Also a unique pianist Daniel Barenboim and an orchestra West-Estern Divan with exceptional young musicians.Gongratulations !
