In this video podcast, we'll take a look at one of the most overlooked peoples of ancient history, the Medes, and reconstruct their early history using Assyrian, Babylonian and Greek sources, namely Herodotus (the Medes don't have any primary sources of their own). It was the Medes and the Median Empire that laid the foundation upon which the Achaemenid Persian Empire of Cyrus the Great and his descendants rested upon.

Thank you for this information about the Medes, the ancestors of the Kurds. In Sulaymaniyah, in the Kurdistan Region, there is a Qazqaban cave, in which there is the tomb of the last king of the Medes.

The Medes appear to be a native tribe or a confederation of tribes which are based in modern day Western Iran. The Medes are strongly connected to the tribes of Zagros and mountain ranges of West and Northern Iran as a matter of fact. They are also known as Mada, Madu, Madai, Mah. King Diakku (Deioces) the first king of the Medes was from the tribe of Mannea which was a tribe/region linked with the Urartians and Mittani. Mannea is now known as Mokrian in Kurdish. We also use the name Diakku in naming our boys. In classical Aramaic and Armenian sources the Kurds are referred to as Mah. The Assyrian oppression literally helped shape the modern Kurdish identity as the Medes unified all the smaller tribes and kingdoms under one banner to defeat the Assyrians. To simply even suggest we are not descended from the Medes is ridiculous, based on geography alone you can tell. However modern day Kurdish borders have definitely been pushed back nowadays, especially by Turkic invasion.

Med language is classified as Western Iranian Languages just like Kurdish, it is the ancestor of Kurdish, 15. In a sacred text written in 7 languages in the century, the Med language is also included. H.W. Some scientists such as Bailey, Henning, Shanidze and David Neil MacKenzie examined the text and said that the text is the same as the Kurdish.

    E. Sloane and Vladimir minorsky described the Kurds as "the son of medes". Much respect and thanks for this great video I'm hewrami - Kurd from hewraman.
  • In the Middle Ages, some historians called the Kurds Med, and interpreted their wars with the Kurds as Med occupation. Median language is included in the class of Western Iranian Languages just like Kurdish. Median is also included in a sacred text written in 7 languages in the 15th century. H.W. Some scholars such as Bailey, Henning, Shanidze and David Neil MacKenzie analyzed the text and found that the text was in Kurdish.

At one point all Kurds spoke in the Med dialect. 1/3rd of the Parthian empire consisted of the Kurdish Pehlewani tribe, and today the Pehlewani language is directly connected to the ancient Mede dialect of the Zaza-Gorani branch of the Kurdish language. Kurds have shown that they deserve their own nation.
  • Med language Median language, or Median, was a Western Iranian language spoken by Medes. It belonged to the Northwest Iran subfamily, which includes many languages such as Kurdish (Sorani, Kurmanji), Zazaki-Gorani, luri Laki Gilan and Beluch.

Nice podcast, love listening to this while doing work in the background!
  • I'm certain that we Kurds are actually the descendents of the Medes. We even say it in our national anthem. "We are the descendents of Medea and Kay Khusraw(Cyaxares)." Kurdish people know what I mean.

You do an excellent job of presenting ancient history in layman's language. Your choice of ancient texts to cite is very dramatic and punchy. I'm fascinated by ancient middle-eastern history and your lectures/podcasts really make it come alive. Thank you, Cy!
  • You have a great pace and cadence with your speaking voice. You sound genuine. Great job.

The first historical document showing the bond between the Medes and the Kurds is in the Kar-nâme, mentioning Erdeşîr I Papakan (242 BC) as the Kurdish king of Med.
  • Wadie Jwaideh, a professor of history at the University of California, said: "The Med Empire, one of the prominent ancestors of the Kurdish people, is the first national state established by the Kurds.
