Paris Olympics 2024: Gaza War's Toll on Palestinian Athletes and Sports

Publicado 2024-07-27
As the world comes together to celebrate the 2024 Paris Olympics, it's difficult to overlook the severe impact that the war on Gaza has had on Palestinian sports. Even though eight Palestinian athletes have made it to the Olympics, around 400 other Palestinian athletes have been killed by Israeli forces in the past 10 months, and 42 sports facilities have been damaged or reduced to rubble.

Those killed include Nazir al-Nashnash, a footballer killed by an Israeli missile in northern Gaza; Ibrahim Qusaya and Hassan Abu-Zuaiter, members of Palestine’s national volleyball team, both killed by an Israeli air strike on Jabalia refugee camp; Bilal Abu Samaan, coach of the national athletics team, killed in an Israeli air raid; Muhammad Barakat, a footballer for Palestine’s national team, killed by an Israeli air strike in southern Gaza; and Majed Abu Maraheel, Palestine’s first Olympian and flag bearer at the 1996 Atlanta Games, who died from kidney failure exacerbated by conditions in Gaza due to the conflict.

The Palestine Olympic Committee has called for Israel to be banned from the Olympics, citing violations of international law and the Olympic Truce, but the International Olympic Committee has rejected this. Many social media users and organizations have accused the IOC of double standards, given Russia's ban over the Ukraine war. They have also drawn parallels with South Africa’s ban from the Olympics due to its apartheid policies.

However, this has not been the case in this year’s Olympics, despite an International Court of Justice ruling which said it was plausible that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza.

The double standards are beyond belief....how anyone expects to be taken seriously after they openly display such bias as unbiased...how demented

I wonder if Israel going face to face with Palestine, the former players will kill the latter players, and they declared that they are the winner even though the while world hates them…

Th utter disgrace and double standards: Russian athletes and teams were banned from any sport competition, meanwhile, Israeli athletes can go and enjoy participating in the Olympics as if nothing is happening.

They had to let them compete in Eurovision because they sponsor it with the Moroccan Oil products they make. What is the excuse for this?
