Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah will “pay a hefty price” after a rocket strike on a football pitch in a town in the occupied Golan Heights killed 11 children and young adults, according to the Israeli authorities. Israel said dozens more were injured in the blast.

The Israel Defense Forces said a rocket fired by the Lebanon-based militant group fell on the Druze town of Majdal Shams. Hezbollah has denied the claim.

Benjamin Netanyahu ended a visit to the US early and returned to Israel to deal with the crisis. Hard right members of his government are calling for war against Hezbollah. The attack has the potential to trigger an all-out conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, whose forces have regularly exchanged fire since the outbreak of war in Gaza.

Jane Hill presents BBC News reporting by Mark Lowen and Paul Adams.

So now hitting a playground and killing innocent kids is a terrorist attack, is it? This definition was paused for the last year, is it?

Golan Heights is Syria. Israel is illegally occupying that area.

  • The Israeli children killed were playing soccer and I’m wondering what the Palestinian kids were doing when they were killed
  • @_ArsNova
Apparently 11 Israeli children matters more than 16,000 Palestinian. Blatant double standard.
  • @Mikaeel84
Is it revenge when they already have killed tens of thousands of young people themselves?
  • @Michael-kf7gm
Does Daniel Hagari really expect us to be outraged after what the IDF did to Gaza and the West Bank?! I’m having difficulty mustering up any sympathy.

If revenge follows revenge, how can a conflict ever end
  • @DMJ-01
What really upsets me is that Netanyahu never speaks about justice. He always talks about revenge.

What does Israel do and no one even condemns. Killing of children on any side should be condemned

Same old story. Hate feeds more hate. The endless cycle, that began from one single initial act in 1947.
