The ketogenic diet is so popular that it was searched over 25 million times in one year. Some experts support its effectiveness to help people lose weight, while others claim that it’s the worst diet to try. Research and data have advanced and proven that everyone has it wrong. Dr. Steven Gundry is with Tom explaining why he and the rest of the medical community got ketosis all wrong. He shares why mitochondrial uncoupling is really the star and this is what you need to know to make your dieting experience easier and more effortless. No need to live completely devoid of carbohydrates on a keto diet any longer.

QUOTES:

“50 percent of normal weight individuals have no metabolic flexibility.” [13:03]

“At full ketosis, human beings can only meet 30% of their calorie needs by burning ketones. The rest have to come from free fatty acids and glucose.” [19:09]

“Ketones are not a super fuel, they are actually a signaling molecule that tells mitochondria to protect themselves at all cost from damage” [20:15]

“In a ketogenic diet, if you do it right and uncouple your mitochondria, you waste fuel. You feed six dogs instead of one, and that's where the benefit of ketosis comes from.” [30:21]

“You want to cycle in and out of ketosis on a 24 hour basis.” [49:37]

“It's the cycling in and out of getting the benefits of ketosis. Without full ketosis, that makes all the difference.” [56:29]

What surprised you most about the Keto diet?
  • @delegate104
Been a keto and no alcohol for 2023 , went from 320 to 240 , I was really strict in nothing with sugar nothing with flour. After 8 months I started eating flour and sugar again is been my second week eating sugar and flour and I can really tell my stress came back feeling tired and my sleep is pattern is bad I went from sleeping 6-7 hours a night to 3-5. Sugar and flour is poison. I'm going back to strict keto.

Dr. Sten Ekberg goes into the science behind keto in depth on his channel. He's an excellent teacher and I'd recommend watching him no matter what sort of diet you're into. Bonus: he isn't selling anything and doesn't push any agenda.

Here are the key points from the conversation between Tom Bilyeu and Dr. Stephen Gundry: 1-Ketones were long thought to be a "superfuel" that makes mitochondria more efficient. But new research shows ketones are actually signaling molecules that tell mitochondria to protect themselves by "uncoupling" and wasting calories as heat. Uncoupling means protons flow out of mitochondria without making ATP energy. This protects mitochondria from damage during starvation, but means we need more calories. 2-Many compounds like polyphenols and MCTs trigger uncoupling. Goat/sheep dairy and purple sweet potatoes provide this in blue zones. Intermittent fasting and time-restricted eating generate mild uncoupling, which may extend lifespan like calorie restriction. Eating in a 6-7 hour window is ideal. 3-You don't have to be in full ketosis. Cycling ketosis by fasting 16 hrs and eating 6-8 hrs gives benefits without downsides like muscle loss. 4-Uncoupling theory explains why birds live so long despite high metabolism. Uncoupling is key to longevity. In summary, ketones aren't a superfuel but a signaling molecule for uncoupling. Mild uncoupling from polyphenols, fasting, etc. can improve mitochondrial health and lifespan.
  • Keto relieved me of gastrointestinal issues, increased my alertness and energy, toned my skin, removed cravings and helped me lose weight quickly.

After I started keto diet my inflammation stopped. I haven’t felt this good in years.
  • @stratasticB
Crushing the goals this year! Intermittent fasting, KETO and Exercise! Down 35 lbs and up to 50 mile rides on the bike. Stopped taking all medications and the inflammation is non-existent.

I had a lot of serious medical issues but since I started dr Berg's intermittent fasting keto diet I am much, much better

I’ve tried every diet out there. Always gained all the weight back. I tried Keto and lost 50 lbs. My blood work was excellent. I have never felt better in my life. I still eat Keto and have kept the weight of 4 years. Action speaks louder than words. I’m sticking to Keto!!
  • @zazaiwon87
Keto/carnivore diet saved me from blood sugar spikes, brain fog, bone and joint pain, depression, several skin conditions, hair loss.. and I'm just 6 weeks in! Never thought this could be possible
  • Ketogenic way of eating heals so many things. This is one doctor though I can't get behind when there are so many others who genuinely just want to help people and are not trying to sell things,
  • @anzaborrego399
What really amazes me is just how exact the opposition in the Keto view is, to what we are told by mainstream medical. The mainstream medical position is incredibly destructive to health and longevity. Tom, you and Steven are brilliant. You do the best interviews I have ever seen.
  • @ZephrusPrime
IF/Keto I've lost 100 lbs in 8 months. I finally feel like myself once again. I still miss french fries and cookies but it feels so much better not being over 300lbs.
  • @hunterjacq
I'm sticking with fasting to lose all this excess weight. Down 50lbs and have 95lbs to go! Feeling great 😃🙌🥳💜
  • I'm 61 years old. I've had acid reflux/gerd for over 20 years. If I happened to miss my daily dose of omeprazole, I experienced significant acid reflux the next day. I've been on the keto diet for 4 days and have discovered my acid reflux is gone. I don't need the medication any more. *Update: On keto for 42 days and have lost 24lbs. from 174lbs to 150lbs. I'm eating less than 20g of carbs per day. The transformation is amazing. Food cravings gone, ABS are back. Almost back to high school weight.

Kick sugar and you're halfway there, then add fasting and that's the other 50%. Humans can eat anything when fasting often. Add in meat, healthy fats and thrive.

Our predecessors didn’t spend so much time micro-analysing their food, they also weren’t surrounded by highly processed foods. Life was simple, you were hungry, you ate whatever was ‘naturally’ grown. Obesity was not a fact of life. Moral? Eat natural and just as much as to satisfy your hunger.
  • @user-rf9wm3bv4f
Stop letting all these voices confuse you about diet and what you should and shouldn't be eating. Its much simpler than that and you find the answer through experimentation. Do elimination diets and find the foods that give you energy and that you digest well. (I say this as someone with autoimmune disease) Ive done every diet you can think of for a minimum of a month up to years and personally find quality animal protein, fruit and certain vegetables works the best for me. Everyone will be different based on your body and health concerns. The only things everyone SHOULD remove are processed foods. Eat the most minimally processed food you can and eat enough to meet your macro/micro nutrient requirements. Don't feel the need to be downing supplements. Most people need as little as Vitamin D, K2 and magnesium and B12 if you're vegan. Simplify! :)
  • Keto and intermittent fasting has been very positive for both my wife and I. In the first 2 weeks we lost a combined nearly 30lbs and have so much more energy now.

I'm 38, I have IBS, insulin resistance, slightly higher than average blood pressure and severe insomnia (by the way, i have ideal weight for my size and age, which basically doesn't mean anything). I started Keto, made a transition of 2 days by lowering carbs gradually on my meals until there was no more than 20g a day. Then i spent 4 days eating 3 meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner, with some snacks in the middle once in a while. At this point, my IBS was already much better, but i needed to eliminate some vegetables that i suspected were still keeping me bloated, so i went carnivore (cow meat, poultry, eggs and fish) for a week and all my IBS symptoms were gone, i felt more energized, more alive and the keto metal clarity kicked in. Also my hunger was less day by day and this prompted me to start intermittent fasting and eating 2 meals a day. So i did and reintroduced back some vegetables, dairy and some other things, every-time i had a slight hint on what was causing IBS i cut that food and introduced another. It's been 30 days since i started this, and now I'm doing 16 hours fasts with 2 meals a day within a 6-8 hour window (depending on my job and schedule). The results are that i lost 5kg, my IBS is totally gone, my blood pressure is normal, i sleep 7-8 hours a day and fall asleep easily and fast. I also do, occasionally, some light exercise at night, 15min 3 days a week. I can say this is the best I've felt in the last decade.
