We are hearing so much these days about the benefit of a ketogenic diet. But while there may be benefits, it's not necessarily the easiest diet for everyone to engage. Further, staying in ketosis for an extended period of time may actually be associated with some fairly significant threats to our health.

Today I'm speaking with Dr. Steven Gundry about his new book, Unlocking the Keto Code. I have to admit that at first, I thought this was going to be another way of engaging the ketogenic diet. But I soon learned that what this book is actually focused on is first, unraveling why a ketogenic diet is beneficial, and secondly, after the reader understands the importance of the mechanisms underlying the ketogenic diet, it provides them the tools for bringing these mechanisms online without specifically going into ketosis.

That certainly sounds like a home run. The book focuses on the notion of "uncoupling mitochondria." This basically means that fuel is wasted as opposed to being utilized. It's a way of actually reducing the efficiency of mitochondrial function to bring about positive health benefits. I know this sounds challenging, and I agree that it is. Nonetheless, Dr. Gundry has done an exceptional job in terms of making this information clear and understandable.

This is a wonderful new book and I believe it's certainly going to dramatically change the playing field moving forward as it brings to our attention not just the benefits of the ketogenic diet, but the value of things like cold exposure, heat exposure, consuming polyphenols, and a variety of other health supportive modalities

I am 84 and no overweight no diabete etc. I accepted symptoms like neurological degradation, lack of apetite and lowered energy levels as pat of ageing. Few months ago I started 16/8 intermittant fasting and 64 hours fasting once in 21 days. I am now brimming with energy and enthusiasm levels of my twenties. Because I had no weight to shed I aeat 3 times during the eating window of 8 hrs. My diet is just low-carb with 10gms of cold pressed coconut oil and moderate amounts of nuts, sprouts and locally grown fruits. My lipid levels, calcium, D vitamin, Vit B12 levels are perfect.

I did a strict keto diet for close to 2 years. It was tough but both sides my family have a history of bad diabetes and I was prediabetic. It's been 4 years now and I went back to eating some wheat products. Mainly sourdough bread did I bake myself. It sits in my refrigerator for 3 to 4 days fermenting. Ill eat All kinds of vegetables including root vegetables. More cheese the Frenchman. A lot more nuts than I used to eat. I make and eat kaffir every day. Lots of eggs lots of mushrooms that I grow myself. And meat mainly chicken and pork with occasional beef. For the most part stay away from sugar, rice, and potatoes. Since going off keto my weight has maintained for over 2 years. I'm at the weight and waist I was in my twenties. Without being hungry and without having to having to restrict my calories. I get hungry around noon and then around 4 and then around 8 just like doctor gundries suggestion. Other than that it's water and nuts when I get hungry if I'm up late.. I'll be turning 70 in 2 months. All my health markers are back to normal. No longer pre diabetic. And my acid reflux that I struggled with for over 20 years went away in 2 weeks of starting the keto diet. I check my keytones around once a month with a with a blood meter. Although I am not in clinical ketosis anymore I do have keytones in my system it seems at all times. Even in my yearly lab test it comes up with keytones in my system. Metabolic flexibility that's the key.

57 and on a 100% carnivore ketogenic diet. Loving it. I feel like I'm in my early 30s and look like I'm in my early 40s. This has been a new lease on life gor me. Arthritis gone, no more allergies, chronic injuries healed, lost 46lbs, mental fog gone, improved memory, no more depression, etc. I eat whenever I am hungry, eat until satiated, and count no macros ever. My bloodwork is amazingly healthy. Zero fiber and perfect bowle movements.

My mother died a slow death from osteoporosis in 2018. She lived with me her last five years. I worked two jobs while taking care of her and the day job was at a we buy gold shop I ran alone 40 to 50 hours a week. I had a lot of time to try to learn something that could help my mother. She ate very little and had fits six or eight times a year where she would vomit and have diarrhea so bad we would call an ambulance and with strong drugs they would stop it. What I eventually learned was that osteoporosis is not something you can reverse and that prevention is key! I’ve learned a great deal from listening to these two fellas and many other YouTube personalities! Some bullet points for those looking to help themselves, cut sugar, eat in a window fasting as long as possible, cut industrial oils from your diet, plants are your friends, remove plant lectins from your diet, remove grains and gluten from your diet! Gluten is sneaky... they put it in everything! Lots of greens, lots of olive oil, lots of berries, mct oil and deep water small fish that don’t live long. Take cold showers often! Take hot baths Or saunas! Meditation is good! Walking or HIIT weight training whatever exercise you can stand at your age… Exercise, fasting, cold showers… And eating food that isn’t poisoning you all seem to have the same effects

The most influential factors to live a long healthy and fulfilled life is to: 1) Have little/ to no stress in your life. 2) Get 8 hours quality sleep each night. 3) Have no money worries. 4) Don't eat processed foods. 5) Cook for yourself from scratch. 6) Do regular hard exercise.

Strangely enough I see Dr Gundry as a prophet of sorts as well as I see it in his development and understanding and that glimmer in his eye and hunger for more knowledge for helping other people.

Thank you both for admitting mistakes in the past ,my dad is 92 years young and no meds at all ,his mom lived till 96 no meds no docs, our food has changed in the last few decades to make us sick so the drug administration can thrive!!!!! So the drug and food admin in this country is thriving in the richest country in the world ,yet we are the sickest ,over weight diabetic heart problems than anyone else in the world, stop and think what the heck is going on!!!
  • @jadeanjoun
I love the fact that you’re true scientists and that you can admit that you have taken a wrong turn and get back on the trail to help people really respect that!
  • @amartins3927
Minute 30: I personally 100% trust someone who’s able to tell “you know, I was wrong” because those are the people who will give you the best advice they have in hand at the time, and not forcing dogmas and cult style catch phrases into others.
  • No judgment from me or anyone else I think for realizing a mistake. The greatest part of it is to correct the mistake and like both of you sharing a new paradigm with your patients/public. I appreciate both of you!
  • I had to wean my son from my milk early. I did it by giving him organic goat's milk with just a few drops of organic maple syrup. He liked it and it seems that it was actually good for him even though I gave him carbs in it. That was 30 years ago before I heard of any MCT or ketones.
  • @brakeme1
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I think this strategy is excellent for someone already on the keto diet rather than a way for more people to access the benefits of ketones. I’ll never forget the way I felt when I woke up producing ketones (myself)… absolutely no pain (or friction of any kind) in my joints…and brain (True!) so there is something to be said for achieving it first on your own with your own system.
  • My diet is Bulletproof stuff, Keto, and Plant based. I feel like sticking to one strict type of diet defeats our biology. Our bodies seem to like flexibility and variety and only REAL food. The Keto Code definitely adds more useful information. I just wish Dr. Gundry didn't come across so much like a snake oil salesman. When I look at his web site & supps and email teasing for new products and his biases between his writings and his web store it's difficult not to feel a bit of sleazy there.
  • Thank you two for being REAL DOCTORS and telling us the truth. Changing your opinions as more science becomes available gives me hope.
  • @petermadany2779
I was pleased to hear that many of the things I've adopted in the past couple years are in the list of 7. My reinterpretation of a couple of the points in this episode are: 1) Whenever consuming plant-based carbs, do one or both of the following: 1a) Eat whole foods that naturally include fiber 1b) Eat fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, natto... 2) Whenever consuming dairy, eat fermented foods like greek yogurt, Icelandic skyr, kefir, crème fraiche, sour cream, real cheese...

The way our bodies work on a molecular level is so amazing! Brings to mind this Bible verse: "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." (Psalm 139:14)
