You can also ask for the board’s IEP and IPRC handbook. It is the policy we need to follow when creating IEPs and it is essentially a step by step guide of the process and who is responsible for what. If you can’t find you child’s IEP guide on the school board’s site, I can share my province’s one with you. Also, notify the board of the absent guide. It’s their responsibility to provide one that is easy to access.

Teachers will answer your terminology questions. Pedagogy is full of jargon. We know that IEPs are living documents and change as they need to. We also know that they are formalized for documentation/ legal purposes and don’t always reflect the on the spot support we’re providing students. IEPs are about the overall academic and social supports that we believe your child has a right to. Any parent who takes the time to ask questions or make suggestions are golden to us because it makes this long and arduous process less administrative and impersonal.
  • And ohhh so fun for a teacher who has never met your kid to sit in on one of those meetings as a representative of general education who has to say they ‘agree’ with whatever is being discussed. 😬😕
