LYRICS

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end
Always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
You didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
And I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know...

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
You didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

I used to know
That I used to know

Somebody...

  • jesus christ man, memories of riding my bike around the neighbourhood in 7th grade with my guys and every time we’d stop and enter a store this song would ALWAYS be playing. Seriously thought it would never die out. Miss my friends from back then, and those times we spent together, but life moves on.

This song has randomly popped back into my life after 8 years
  • "somebody that i used to know" is one of the most down to earth, painful lines we adults have to deal with as we get older. Miss so many people I used to know

The vocal performances in this song are amazing. You can hear the hurt and pain from both Gotye and Kimbra in their vocal tone. They use light and shade expertly and manage to convey a complex situation through such a simple melody.

Who even is this guy? I don’t think he actually exists outside of this song.

edit: the amount of people who think this comment is serious is mind blowing

Damn reading these comments is giving me goosebumps. Truthfully I remember disliking and being too dismissive toward this song originally, due to the radios playing it to death and middle/high school me always seemed to instinctually dislike whatever was popular,, but this shits the real sleeper.

That emotion in the vocals is just so beautiful, I love this shit man. it's really cool thinking back to where I was in life when this just came out too. I miss those days... so innocent and practically hadn't experienced any of real life yet.

I just like that this song is 8 years old and people still like comments

10 years old me: it doesn't make any sense
8 years later: it hits different

I remember when this song came out. I never knew it would mean what it means to me now back then. I had no idea I’d lose my best friend of over a decade, and have this song fit how I feel about her. It’s been almost two years now since we last spoke, and I still miss her so badly. But I know now it isn’t her That I miss, it’s what we used to have that I miss. She became someone I couldn’t even recognize anymore in the end of our friendship, and truthfully I was happy it was over. But that cannot erase the massive amount of love and care I had for this person, so of course it was going to hurt like hell when she dropped me as if our friendship never meant anything… I imagined myself growing old with her. We’d talk about it frequently… I will miss you everyday for the rest of my life, but I can’t go back. 😔
