Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a 2013 action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the sixth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series. Its historical timeframe precedes that of Assassin's Creed III (2012), but its modern-day sequences succeed III's own. Black Flag was originally released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U in October 2013 and a month later for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One. It was later ported to the Nintendo Switch as part of The Rebel Collection alongside Assassin's Creed Rogue in December 2019. The game was released for Google Stadia in September 2021.

The plot is set in a fictional history of real-world events and follows the millennia-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight to preserve peace and free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The framing story is set in the 21st century and depicts the player as an employee of Abstergo Industries (a company used as a front by the modern-day Templars), who is manipulated into uncovering secrets related to the Assassin-Templar conflict and the precursor race known as the First Civilization. The main story is set in the West Indies during the Golden Age of Piracy from 1715 to 1722, and follows notorious Welsh pirate Edward Kenway, grandfather of Assassin's Creed III protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton / Connor and father of antagonist Haytham Kenway, as he searches for fortune and a mythical location called the Observatory, which is sought by both the Assassins and the Templars. A major plot element concerns the attempted establishment of an independent Pirate republic in the Caribbean.

Unlike previous games, gameplay elements focus more on the ship-based exploration of the seamless open world map, while also retaining the series' third-person land-based exploration, melee combat, and stealth system. Multiplayer also returns, albeit with only land-based modes and settings. The game's setting spans the West Indies with the three main cities of Havana, Nassau, and Kingston, along with numerous islands, sunken ships, and forts. Players have the option to harpoon large sea animals and hunt land animals. For the first time in the series, naval exploration is a major part of an Assassin's Creed game, where Edward captains the Jackdaw, a brig he captures from a Spanish fleet in an early game mission. A number of downloadable content (DLC) packs were released to support Black Flag, including Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry, a story expansion that was later made available as a standalone game in 2014. Set over a decade after Black Flag's main campaign, Freedom Cry follows Adéwalé, Edward's former quartermaster who became an Assassin.

  • Ubisoft marketing the remake by promoting piracy, pretty genius
  • Hey Luke, just a quick sidenote: this game NEVER allowed you to play it above 63 fps. This was a limitation by the engine Ubisoft used back then, and was not broken with the latest patch. It was always that way.
  • @LukeStephensTV
EDIT: NEW UPDATE! It has been fixed. It still takes a good amount of tweaking to get it running well on PC, but now it's not broken!

so ubisoft can effectively take a product you bought years ago and break it. Thats like me buying a vase that I like, and then the guy who sculpted it breaks into my house and drills holes into it. When I complain he says "Remember that contract we signed when you bought it? I said right hear that I can do this. Thank you."

What irony to need to go sailing the High Seas to preserve one of the best Pirate games around.
  • @benelmore745
To be fair, you couldn't play the game at higher than 60 fps before the patch. It was a bit of a technical mess even before.
  • @BRIGGS2710
If you don't want people to buy your game, this is what you do.
  • @Zinkolo
I definitely believe Ubisoft is the type of company to break an old game just to sell a remake. Rockstar took down their old ports of GTA just to sell the broken remasters. Companies these days are doing wild things to screw over their consumers and this feels way too plausible to dismiss.
  • Everyone expected that a new game released by Ubisoft, would be released broken, but no one expected that a game from 10 years ago would become broken
  • @BenBuki
I honestly cannot get my hopes up, i have a feeling this remakes will be a massive letdown given how lazy ubisoft is
  • @Martuf
unlike other AC games, black flag (and brotherhood) doesnt save on the ubi cloud, so its always a good idea to have the save file somewhere safe

After owning the game on xbox 360 when I was younger, I bought the gold edition on pc 2 years ago planning to play the base game again and playing the freedom cry dlc for the first time. Only to find out unless you buy the dlc as stand-alone you can't play it, none of the dlc (exclusive weapons, armour and time savers) activate in the game even if your account show you own everything, online features (social activities like white whales, royal convoys and social chests and the kenway's fleet) haven't worked for years even while ubisoft says everything is still online and running. I opened a support ticket, nothing got resolved and found out I wasn't the only one, these bugs have been known for 5+ years evertime the support staff interacted with players we received the same message everytime 'we know about these problems and are working on them'.

I used to be able to play AC Unity and Syndicate on my Steam Deck but at some point Ubisoft made the creative decision to make the game sign into your Uplay account that doesn’t work anymore and making the games unplayable.

My biggest issue with black flag is the running=climbing thing. Because its hard to run on the ship without climbing on something. Run should be run and there should be a different button for climbing like we have in unity.
  • @JPizzy986
They did this recently with Rocksmith, where they released an update that broke mod support so that they could re-release the game with a smaller (but different) catalog. So while incompetence is likely, it wouldn't be unheard of for them to be breaking their games on purpose for financial reasons.
  • @carston101
I have this for PS3 and PS4. One of my favorite AC games (second only to AC3). I'm not surprised in the slightest that Ubi managed to utterly break one of their games with a simple store update patch.
  • @tonydeluna8095
Black Flag is unique, the pirate atmosphere is incredible setting. A pirates life for me! But it sucks to hear Ubisoft broke the game with the patch
  • @Anska5126
Fun fact: While I was fortunate to be able to run the game and play it and start a new save in windowed mode. The Fleet System is in an eternal Load screen. I captured so many good ships as well so the Fleet System is down too. When I looked into it it seems like this part has been an ongoing issue for years though and they never patched it so, who knows. Maybe Ubisoft did a GTA V or a New Halo era and just don't care about the game enough to fix it anymore despite the fact people payed real money for it and all it's DLC and customisation options
