The Rise Of The Plantagenets | Britain's Bloodiest Dynasty | Chronicle

The dynasty on which Game of Thrones is based is masterfully brought to life by Dan Jones in this four part series. Following one of the most shocking periods in British history, a new historical docu-drama brings to life the dynasty that dragged Britain out of the dark ages and into the modern world.

The historian begins with Henry II - the first king of the dynasty - a dashing and energetic warrior who transformed England from a violent and lawless state into the heart of an empire that would become one of the greatest that Europe has ever seen. However, his success was undone by a series of bitter betrayals.

Welcome to Chronicle; your home for all things medieval history! With documentaries covering everything from the collapse of the Roman Empire to the beginnings of the Renaissance, from Hastings to Charlemagne, we'll be exploring everything the Middle Ages have to offer.

Not going to lie. I'm addicted to this series. I would love if there was something of similar energy and quality for the Kings of France.
  • Thank you . Somehow listening to medieval wars is preferable to listening to the current worlds problems at the moment. Seems like not much has changed eh? 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

"The Lion in Winter" gives a very entertaining rendition of Henry's conflict with his wife and sons. Excellent movie from 1968 starring Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole.
  • Isn't Eleanor's actress the same one who played Margaret Beaufort? Love these videos
  • Dan Jones is an excellent host and truly enjoy his abilities to teach and speak. Wherever you are Dan.. thank you and thank you BBC :-)
  • i don't understand how there isn't a tv shows on the Plantagenets, if done in a similar quality to this documentary it would be better than 95% of existing series!
  • The middle ages have always been the most fascinating period of history for me. I love anything to do with it. I have since I can't remember. But for some reason I just came to this realization not that long ago. And every time I think about how long ago it was it blows my mind lol
  • Beautifully narrated and to the point. I also had very little knowledge of this era in English history. It has now filled a large gap. Thanks. 😁👍🏻🇦🇺
  • I´m obsessed with all the series of Dan Jones, but perhaps if you make a show similar to this, but about the celts, or roman britain I will binge-watch about a Thousand times. C´mon Dan Jones, I know that you love to write , but this... Is GOLD. Luv ya!

  • Man, what a great story. And you tell it so well. RIP Henry II.
  • I love these documentaries! I don't know much about the Middle Ages, so this is a great way to learn.
  • Wow! I love this documentary! I can see so many of George R.R Martin's inspirations for the Targaryan's plot lines here.
  • It's kind of crazy how England hated France so much but it was actually French nobility that formed England and adopted English as official language.
