Reign Of Terror: The Vicious Rule Of King Richard II | Britain's Bloodiest Dynasty | Timeline

Published 2017-07-08
The British dynasty on which Game of Thrones is based is skilfully brought to life

Following one of the most shocking periods in British history, a new historical docu-drama brings to life the dynasty that dragged Britain out of the dark ages and into the modern world. Ruling the country for over three hundred years, ruthlessly crushing all competition, The Plantagenet story is more shocking, more brutal and more astonishing than anything you’ll find in Game of Thrones.

Presented by acclaimed historian Dan Jones, the Plantagenets combines his scintillating story-telling with drama reconstruction and brings to life a dramatic and bloody time in England’s history.

This is history like you’ve never seen it before. Dan delivers his extraordinary take on one of the most visceral and violent chapters in British History. The series begins with Henry II, a control freak betrayed by his own wife and children after the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket. Episode two reveals the collapse of friendship between Henry III and Simon de Montfort, spiraling into bloody civil war. Edward II’s obsession with revenge tears England apart in episode 3. Finally, episode four tells the story of the boy king tyrant, Richard II, one of the most vicious and inventive despots in history.

The Richard II actor is really, really good. His smile when he welcomes Bolingbroke back with "cousin!" is pure malice.
  • Conclusion of the series: if you’re a Plantagenet king, don’t have a best friend.

Fun fact: When Dan Jones mentions that Henry has been on crusade, he is not talking about the crusades in the Holy Land, which by this time were over. He is referring to the Northern Crusades in which the Teutonic knights fought the pagan Lithuanians. Henry fought alongside the Teutonic knights in these campaigns, particularly the Siege of Vilnius.

"Astonishingly... peace breaks out". Quite good description of the period.

And thus, the throne passed from the Primary Line of the Plantagenet family, to the cadet branch of the House of Lancaster, setting the stage for more dynastic struggle. Oh goody.

If anyone has just watched this series let me tell you: The Plantangents by Dan Jones is awesome and worth a read, it covers them all, not just the Kings here.

I love English history. It has everything. Evil kings, cruelty, bloodlust and non-stop action. Better than any Hollywood movie.

Man this guy was a really great narrator. Probably the best I've heard in years. You can tell he loves this stuff. Love to play some crusader kings II with him.

Tywin Lannister: “Do you really think a crown can give you power?” Tyrion Lannister: “No, I think armies give you power.”

The men who stood against the king!! They were really brave. Richard’s personality was really terrifying 😐

It's kinda amusing to watch Richard II threaten Henry Bolingbroke only to be confused by the fact that Henry isn't afraid of him anymore.

    I’m addicted to these documentaries!

For anyone interested I'd recommend Dan Jones' books wholeheartedly. Both Wars of the Roses and The Plantagenets are cracking good reads.

17:13 reminds me of Tyrion telling Joffrey "The Mad King did as he likes. Did your uncle Jamie tell you what happen to him? Talk about educating your nephew.
