I love Merry in this scene.  He doesn't ask why Frodo has to get out of the Shire, he doesn't wash his hands of him when dangerous men in black are after his kinsman.  He just does what needs to happen to help him get that done.  This is why I love the 4 Hobbits throughout all 3 movies of the LOTR Trilogy.

Remember seeing this scene for the first time in the cinema - it's one of those moments you know you're watching something special.

Meriadoc Brandybuck, asks no questions, doesn’t abandon his friends, does whatever is needed to help them out. A true bro to the end, right up there with Samwise.

Merry is the smartest of the 4 hobbits. Also, he's the most perceptive, intuitive one.
  • I actually think the Nazgul riding on horseback in FOTR are scarier than the next two films, I love the shots of them riding through the dark forest and then that great shot where you see one against the moonlight.
  • Years later and that Nazgul screech is still terrifying! It’s enough to give you PTSD.

The last sound on the video is the spookiest for me.
  • Nazgul: goddamit Sauron! why u no give us bows? this is why you cant have nice things.

Is nobody talking about the fact that even those horses sound like monsters from hell itself? How amazing is that? I know why I think these are the best movies ever made. So happy that I could watch all of them in cinema and I am so grateful that my dad introduced me into this wonderful world of middle earth 20 years ago :)

No matter how many times I see this scene, I get so tense!!  LOVE this story!!
  • I love the description of buckland in the books. It’s like a weird little hobbit fort where despite all the hobbit pastoralism they maintain some nature of militarism

Jesus the way those other two Nazgul just appear out of nowhere as the 3rd one links up with them... Spooky shit man.

I have always loved the horror elements of Lord of the Rings. Better than horror movies because they make you feel dread

Great lighting, sound and editing. The way the Blackrider just jumps out on them is just brilliant, startling the audience as much as the characters. You get the feeling danger could be lurking around every corner and the hobbits don't have a chance, which helps set up the meeting with Strider so well, because then at last they've found someone who can guide them now Gandalf has gone missing.

This is why Fellowship was my favourite movie of the trilogy. It made you more afraid of guys on horses than the subsequent films could with an entire army.

1:41 That shot and the music are so good it gives me goosebumps
  • Nazgul were so much cooler in this film. Riding horses and wielding huge swords.

You know, when all the LOTR stuff came out and all the hype around, I was only 11 and didn't care much about it but now that I'm older and into all the stuff like this and Game of Thrones, I finally realize how much of a masterpiece this series and collection is. The casting, wardrobe, story and everything is so perfect and especially for its time (2001). Same for The Hobbit movies.
