The way he said go, be at peace. Was so sincere, the ghost army was so relieved to hear those words

This is one of the shining examples of why Aragorn is kingly in his actions and deeds. He honored his promise to them.

The citizens of Minas Tirith witnessing Aragorn's appearance while commanding the Army of the Dead was a key element in the acceptance of him as Isildur's true heir.

When I was a kid and saw the ghosts running into battle, I actually jumped and cheered. My grandfather laughed. Grandma's told me to calm down. So many memories.

I loved how without a question, Aragorn let them go in peace as he promised. I give you my word.

This is probably the most OP army ever. They cannot die, they travel fast across land/water/air, they have large numbers, they can move through solids and they have intelligence.

For those who don't know the lore, the ghosts' oath was to protect Gondor's interior, not fight outside of it. Their oath was fulfilled. If Aragorn tried to keep them to fight outside of Gondor's borders, they could have cursed Aragorn like they were cursed since he would be breaking his part of the oath. At the time of the first war with Sauron, the one these guys were going to fight in, Gondor's borders reached Mordor, but they no longer do. On top of that, Sauron specializes in controlling the undead. Wraiths and ghosts included. He is the Necromancer. Taking them there to fight Sauron would have been a bad idea for a lot of reasons. They would have fallen under Sauron's influence.

I love the extended edition coz it shows an Aragon that loses all hope. No ghost army, alone, seeing the enemy backup coming and he can’t do anything. He truly felt like he failed. Then he’s given hope again. The acting was perfect

as someone who read the books after viewing the movies I really have grown to understand why this is such a rare gem, where several changes were made or added in the movie from the book, that fit so well with the story, and even enhance it

So many people in the comments going "Just make them wipe out Mordor no problem" please keep in mind that the Oathbreakers were ghosts. Sauron specialized in necromancy and dark magic to control the dead (thats why the Nazgul and Barrow Wights deferred to Sauron). Bringing an army of spectres to Mordor would have been suicide because the moment they were close enough, Saurons magic would easily subvert their will and have them slaughter the armies of Man. What Aragorn did was use his brain and his honor instead of going "Lets bring undead to fight against the guy who specializes in controlling the undead". One of Saurons many titles was The Necromancer after all

this movie is 19 years old. it's still better than most stuff out there today.

I have a theory. When in the confrontation with the ghosts and they nearly get buried in an avalanche of skulls, I believe each time a skull rolls into the middle it’s that ghost’s skull voting yes to join with Aragorn’s cause. Since they’re all voting yes, it turns into a bunch of avalanches.

Aragorn actually holding true to his word and not trying to keep them to help in the next fight is honestly one of the things that stood out for me about him and his honor. So many otherwise would have tried weaseling their promise. And never as a king/general "with what army?" cos they just answer "this army" 😂

" They will answer to the King of Gondor!" This scene give me chill. One of the most iconic !

Imagine training so hard for years to become a great soldier, but in the end face this kind of an enemy.

I love when bad guys say that line. If you see few men defiantly standing in your way telling you to leave, never ask “you and what army?” It never ends well
