/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */

Alright so The Super Mario Bros Movie is now out digitally and after rewatching the movie, I’ve realized that, yeah uhhhh this movie is chalked full of easter eggs. So instead of doing a full scene by scene breakdown, I wanted to touch on as many easter eggs, like Mario’s hat, look at that hat, that’s one right?! *Let's a Go!*

Dang Mario, no need to panic buddy. So grab your overalls, ground pound that like button, and block smash subscribe to stay up to date on all things Heavy Spoilers. Now here we gooooooo!!

Alright so this opening Bowser entrance features his flying castle fortress that was first introduced back in 2000’s Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64 console. This made a few more appearances later on, but also has some DNA from Bower’s Lava Lair that was featured in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Bowser’s army features a bevy of Koopas, as they’re cleverly separated into ranks by their shell color. Greens look to be privates, Reds are like sargents, and Blues are commanders. I’m probably getting those ranks and verbage wrong, but it’s because of what their shells are cabable of doing in Mario Kart, with green shells being the most pedestrian, red shells will track, as blue shells always hit their mark.

8:11 come on man, that's the dog from duck hunt
  • @Rao_Rolland
A bunch of easter eggs and references for people 40 and over in a movie stylized for 6 years olds. GENIUS!!!!!!
  • @stillscrubbin
The post-credit Yoshi egg is likely the same one that was placed on the wedding gift table, must have fallen here when Mario broke Bowser's Castle
  • I think the best part about the Easter Eggs is that they don’t feel nauseating or distract from the character and story like most things nowadays. Disney Star Wars constantly thinks nostalgia is storytelling when it’s not. But here the Easter eggs feel like both stuff for the fans as well doing a smart thing by incorporating them into the narrative. Like making the eel from Mario 64 be what eats Mario and DK is a smart idea. This film feels like a genuine love letter to the games and to the fans.

Bowser's Peaches song has two easter eggs. First, if you sing the "Peaches Peaches Peaches-Peaches-Peaches" part really fast, it's the Star Power Up song. Second, the chord progression is the exact same as Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up". The entire world got Rick Rolled. 😂

After Mario and Luigi defeat Bowser in Brooklyn, the crowd cheers for them. Among their audience is none other than the late Satoru Iwata, the previous president and CEO of Nintendo from 2002 till his unexpected death in 2015.
  • @krististarosta6736
You know, it’s strange, but the dog who attacked Mario and Luigi looked a little bit like Dug from Disney Pixar’s Up.
  • 29:56 Is a reference to the Princess Peach Castle on Super Smash Bros Melee when the Bullet Bill comes down during the level and blows up on the tower!
  • @DaBoff858
Jack Black's "Peaches" song needs an award. My Wife can't stop singing it!!! Plus it's her ringtone....
  • @m1nd_fl4y3r_m80
They put so much love and effort into this movie and it really shows.
  • 11:17 I think the duck sign could also be a reference to their next movie migration which is about ducks going on vacation
  • @enigma-189
Their work vehicle (I thought) was a reference to the live action movie, especially since, like in the movie, it has trouble with an overheating engine. Subtle or maybe just a stretch but that's how I saw it.
  • @DorianSalas-uw8lb
The scene of the Yoshi herd is a reference to the opening cutscene in Smash Bros Melee
  • @chrisdealemania
Agree to the Ghostbusters shoutout! Had the same gut feeling in that moment!
  • @sixmileswest
The original switch joy cons (besides dark grey) was Neon Red and Blue. You’re showing the animal crossing version.
  • 17:44 That isn’t a Boom Boom look at the head. That’s a Sledge Brother (Giant Hammer Bros from Mario 3 that throw hammers and slam the ground to stun the player if they’re also on the ground when they land)
  • @adraino7345
I think I’ve said it before but as much as I love Paul as a disembodied voice dishing out jokes and spoilers Jared is an excellent partner. It’s crazy to think you guys don’t do videos together because it feels like you guys have nailed the synergy and style.
  • @cheddulous
Magikoopas (called Kameks in Japanese) first appeared in Super Mario World. They’re virtually identical to the character Kamek so I feel like they should be referenced as the origin.
