This MAY be a stretch, but during the Bowser Rave scene, one of the Koopas playing the music is sporting some pointy shades. This COULD be a reference to the original Paper Mario games, where Koopa Troopas wore pointy glasses.

One thing I LOVE about the references in this movie is that they never feel random and out of place, they did a good job at contextualising them into the movie! (Also wow! You managed squeeze them all in a 30 minutes video!!)

Mario playing Kid Icarus is my favorite easter egg because of how honored Pit must be being a Mario fan himself. Also thanks to the 4th-wall destroying nature of Kid Icarus Uprising openly accepting its existence as a game sequel, Pit appearing as a video game could count as a full in-person cameo.

7:05 Even for the non-Mario aficionados out there, that book could just be The Odyssey by Homer.
  • 28:42 if you look at the taxi in the bottom right corner you can see the top of it says “save the kingdom” and this may be foreshadowing Mario getting back up to save not only the mushroom kingdom but Brooklyn as well.

I think my favourite part of the movie was the Mushroom Kingdom itself, they made it really feel like and actual kingdom with the denizens just going about their daily lives

13:35 It's so sad that Toadsworth wasn't able to be in the movie; it was such a simple addition, and considering the amount of easter eggs, it only makes think that, for some reason, it was a deliberate choice to not have Toadsworth. It would have been wholesome if the Toad holding Baby Peach when she first arrived would have been a younger Toadsworth.

12:54 Also worth noting, when Toad cooks for the Toad guards, the music is from Mario Odyssey's Luncheon Kingom

I just love the way they used so many old obscure references to fill out the background and world they created for the movie. They could have easily used generic cartoon stock objects and no one would have cared, but the fact the they really took the time to flesh out the world with all this stuff really shows that the artists behind it care about what they were doing. I also think that making their version of Brooklyn this retro wonderland full of references to the old Nintendo games is a great idea.
  • There is one thing you missed- the kart that Stuart (one of the minions, Illumination’s mascot) drives is a variation of Gru’s vehicle from the Despicable Me films

Th musical easter eggs are by far my personal favorite. Brian Tyler did an amazing job at using the surplus of source material within the score!
  • @themagicpunch
One thing that was missed is that one of Mario and Luigi's relatives is named Uncle Tony, which seems to be a Super Show reference as the Bros make mentions of a Uncle Tony a few times (although he was never seen on screen)

The Super Star also has a more dramatic rendition when Bowser finds it at the start of the movie. Bowser's floating lair thing is also possibly a reference to Paper Mario, where Bowser's castle appears as a floating chunk of land underneath Peach's castle, with the giant spike balls on chains as its anchors. The Ghost House theme from Super Mario World plays while Luigi is escaping from the Dry Bones horde. The "peace sign" on the flag Baby Luigi holds isn't a peace sign, it's a skull. The modern P-Switch theme plays while Mario is getting lost in the pipe maze before arriving at the castle. In the vignette of Bob-Omb Battlefield, not only are the cannon and floating island visible, but so is the bridge and the Cap Block beside it - though it's replaced with a standard yellow Question Block. And not really an Easter Egg but more of a missed opportunity, but the voxel art for the Question Block that turns into the obstacle course is completely original to the movie - it does not match any existing Question Block sprites.

I would've loved if there was a reference to Mario and Pauline being a couple in the past. Like maybe one of his family members could talked about how he dropped the ball with not keeping her or something. Also, I don't know if that was Swanky Kong because he didn't have the jewelry which is a big part of his design
  • @isaacdiboss
14:58 I believe that's actually a skull, not a peace symbol! 27:55 That Clown Car with the cannon in its mouth is probably a reference to that Bowser Jr battle from NSMB Wii!
  • @GmShyGuy
29:37 So while it isn't shown in the video, Mario and Luigi crouch before jumping to perform the iconic Forward Aerial. The crounching could be a reference to Super Mario Bros. 2, where if you crouch for a while, you can jump way higher, which is basically what they do here. Also! Our best guy Shy Guy also had it's classic sounds from the games.
  • @scoopskicat
29:22 Self-proclaimed world's biggest Fuzzy fan here, and I have to say, am so happy that the perfect lifeform did get into the movie in the end. Thank you for bringing this to my attention!!
  • @catluvr2
You missed that Toad's vehicle is the Tiny Titan from Mario Kart Wii, as a vehicle only usable by the light weight class, which Toad is in.
  • 5:51 the chef on the bottle of vinegar is the DS Chef from Personal Training: Cooking 8:32 the level 1-2 sign is also designed to resemble the original nintendo playing card hq sign in kyoto
  • @joeleboeuf
26:46 I like how Peach just went full on Ice Queen with the ice flower. I'm sure that display of power would make even Elsa proud.
