  • I just finished the entire tutorial. And I must say what a phenomenal journey it was!!! Now I see animation everywhere even in my dreams πŸ˜‚
  • @MrMisterswift1
I've now done 2hours 30 minutes straight. and I just want to tell anyone who is reading the comments just to be sure it is worth their time, IT IS SOOO WORTH IT! this guy has really done a good job. I have learnt so much in just two hours. Don't think twice, click play. He is teaching everything. unlike in most tutorials where they teach like you already know a bit about what u r doing. you won't find a resource like this anywhere.
  • @msk4421
Over two years later and this video can still be considered a treasure. Thanks Mr. Cole. I"m 9 hours in and have gained a lot going through your course.
  • At this point, I have to say... knowledge is literally free now and still I find people who always complain that "they don't know stuff"
  • @basicmovies3597
This is amazing. I literally cried when i found this, i want to learn to edit so bad, but i dont have money to take classes. I had to use whatever tips i could find online and i was still struggling, this is so perfectly organized. So well made, thank you, youve helped me so much in pushing me into my future career. You're amazing for this, I appreciate this so much.

Good guide on people starting with after effects. I want to add quite a lot of things though. (you need a 100 hours to actually explain after effects, or more...) Center your layer anchor point with Layer > Transform > Center anchor point in layer (shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + Home) Set your start timecode to completely 0 by just typing a single 0, you can also just type 5:00 and it will be 5 seconds, same applies for the length. Create your own text animations with animators and range selectors. Set the shape (open advanced) to ramp up or down and animate the offset. This will overlap the current animation over multiple characters. You can add multiple properties to this range selector. For example the scale, opacity and position can all animate as they come in range. Use a loop expression to repeat existing keyframes. Alt-click the stopwatch of the property you want to loop and type: loopOut('') or loopIn('') (loop before or after the keyframes) then type one of these beteween the quotes. Cycle (default, start to end then repeat), Pingpong (start to end, end to start), Continue (takes current velocity and adds it over time), Offset (Add values on top of each other, example: 100 > 200 > 190 > (starts the loop) 290 > 280.) I prefer using masks and a stroke effect to create a write on effect. You just use paths as masks and animate from 0% to 100%. It is much easier to edit as there are not so many confusing keyframes. Use Ctrl + Alt + C to copy with property links. This way all properties of the effect are linked to the original and you only have to change 1 to change it all. You could also apply the effect to the composition to apply it to everything Graph Editor: To make more complicated animations, you need the graph editor. You can use the graph editor for any animated object to get a visual representation for the animation over time. You can change the handles on the anchor points to create different a ease in and out. The value graph is the most intuitive and it displays the value over time, you also have the speed graph which displays speed over time. Sometimes you cant use the value graph since a property like a path for example doesn't have a numeric value. When masking it's very useful to set the mask mode to none so you can see everything You can create a mask on a shape layer either by just right clicking the layer > new > mask. Or if you want to use a shape or the pen tool you can toggle creating shapes to creating masks by clicking on the checkerboard mask next to the star shape to the right of the toolbar. Layer properties shortcuts: Hold shift to bring up multiple at a time Anchor point: A Position: P Scale : S Rotation: R Opacity: T Shortcuts to edit length and time of layers/keyframes and move the playhead, these are really useful so you don't have to zoom in to your timeline to accurately move thee things i : Moves the playhead to inpoint of selected layer o : Moves the playhead to outpoint of selected layer Home: Moves the playhead to the start of the composition End: Moves the playhead to the end of the composition Page up: Moves the playhead 1 frame forwards Page down: Moves the playhead 1 frame backwards Shift + Page up: Moves the playhead 10 frames forwards Shift + Page down: Moves the playhead 10 frames backwards J: Moves playhead to the previous keyframe in the selected layer K: Moves playhead to the next keyframe in the selected layer [ : Moves layer inpoint to the playhead (moves entire layer) ] : Moves layer outpoint to the playhead (moves entire layer) Alt + [ : Moves layer inpoint to the playhead (moves inpoint only) Alt + ] : Moves layer outpoint to the playhead (moves outpoint only) Ctrl + [ : Moves selected layer down by 1 in the layer order Ctrl + ] : Moves selected layer up by 1 in the layer order Ctrl + Shift + [ : Moves selected layer to the bottom in the layer order Ctrl + Shift + [ : Moves selected layer to the top in the layer order Alt + Page up: Moves selected layers 1 frame forwards Alt + Page down: Moves selected layers 1 frame backwards Alt + Shift + Page up: Moves selected layers 10 frames forwards Alt + Shift + Page down: Moves selected layers 10 frames backwards Alt + Right arrow: Moves selected keyframes 1 frame forwards Alt + Left arrow: Moves selected keyframes 1 frame backwards Alt + Right arrow: Moves selected keyframes 10 frames forwards Alt + Shift + Left arrow: Moves selected keyframes 10 frames backwards Other shortcuts: U: Shows all keyframes in a composition or a selected layer U twice: Shows all modified properties in a composition or a selected layer ~ (tilde, below escape) : Maximize selected panel to entire after effects window (very useful in complex projects to have a huge timeline. F9: Easy ease keyframes B: Sets start of work area to playhead N: Sets end of work area to playhead Ctrl + Shift + X: Trim comp to work area This makes trimming your comp easy, just use the playhead shortcuts and then press B for the start and N for end. Then just trim the comp If your footage is shaky, the effect "warp stabilizer" does a ridiculously good job at stabilizing it and automatically resizes your footage. I didn't expect this comment to be so long lmao, and i've just kept on adding if i realized i forgot something.
  • I owe you my future success. Thank you, Jack! You explained well - easy to understand. Love this!
  • @mugiwastraesp
Holy, what an awesome course! Thank you so much for posting this out, it's almost (2023) and it's still very valuable, some of the resources were missing but nothing to serious, providing you replace them with other footage. Overall an amazing experience, covering all the essentials and not digging us through a rabbit hole, but instead giving us what's useful and going straight to how to use it, Tysm Jack! hope your channel regains the traction
  • @winterfoxcloud
I did this entire 11+ hr tutorial and I'm not going to lie, I got more out of this one YT class than I did in 2 semesters of uni. I feel bad for my parents
  • Hats off to his patience. Whether someone use it or not. We must appreciate him for his kind effort. Thanks Mr Jack.
  • @idzakaiasan
Found this one yesterday, just WOW, amazing. Thanks for putting so much effort into this. Your teaching skills are fantastic, really fun, relaxed way to learn.
  • Hey! I just want to thank you soooo much for helping people like us to learn about after effects!! I'm one of those people who struggle financially so I depend solely on Youtube for tutorials, but they are often cluttered and unorganized so finding a huge course that is well-structured really helps me into making a progress! I hope you earn lots of money from this πŸ‘ Thank you so much! Wish you a healthy and successful career!
