Inspiration is a fragile thing. One second it’s there, as bright as the sun, the next you’re trekking through a barren wasteland without even a glimmer of hope. I think I’ve made many mistakes. I wanted only happiness, failing to realise that sadness and pain is needed for the relief after. White is not white without black. Even whilst knowing those words, claiming that I understood them, I really knew nothing all along. I turned my eyes away from reality. At first it was exhilarating, a constant rush of excitement through my weary mind. I felt great, like the entire world was my own, and I was truly free. I naively thought it’d always be like that. It wasn’t. I know now that I’m stuck in the dark, unable to see a thing. It’s not black. It’s not white. It’s nothing at all. Inspiration is fragile. One second it’s there, and you’re chasing a blinding dream through grassy fields with clear skies. The sun is beaming down upon you and everything feels great. It’s heaven I guess. The next, you’re pulled back to reality. The dreams that have been yours and yours alone this whole time are out there for the world to see. Your heart is left exposed on a canvas, as onlookers marvel at it like they would at any other creation. It’s no longer just yours. Their smiles, their feelings, their momentary happiness that was borne from looking at your creation; that’s your responsibility to uphold. It’s not only ‘yours’ now. Such a responsibility is surprisingly heavy. You aren’t free to do as you pleased any more, they have expectations for you. It’s no longer fun. That bright open field begins to wither ever so slowly, as the light begins to die. It’s so slight that you barely notice it at first. In fact, you may not realise anything until it’s all turned to ashes in a pitch black world. For their expectations, for their smiling faces, you tried to fuel the sun. Carrying it all alone, you poured blood sweat and tears into igniting the flame of your inspiration-your art. Yet before long, it becomes noticeable that the sun had started to die. But still, you were trying hard, desperately throwing fuel at those embers, trying to get them to light into a blaze of its former glory. And it did. And it was so sudden that it lit the whole world ablaze. Ashes. Ashes. Ashes. Silently smouldering embers, a world of grey and smoke. Trying to hard will only make you lose everything. It’s a blessing in moderation, a curse if not handled with care. But if you were to carry on, no matter how many failures you may see, something new will be born from those ashes. It will never be the same. It will not be easy. Still, my heart says confidently, that the time of rebirth will come. Even when everything seems pointless. Even when there’s no hope to be found. Even when you run away. I still believe, you’ll create a truly beautiful world one day! (I wrote this as a way of cheering myself up I guess? Trying to remind myself it’s worth fighting for something rather than being content with nothing. If this helps anyone else, then I’m really glad!!)
