Doing A PhD: Common PhD Concerns In The Social Sciences ( Doctorate In Business Administration )

Published 2018-09-16
There are many PhD concerns that are common to everyone that is doing a PhD. It is a difficult degree to pursue. Everyone struggles with a PhD, but for some reason many of us keep going through it. Here are some common PhD concerns, and how to think about these concerns.

1. You will not get a PhD job. Everyone will likely get a PhD, but you have to be very creative with selling your skills. Most people are not going to understand your skills, so it is up to you to show what you can do.

2. Your PhD supervisor hates you or you are experiencing PhD supervisor bullying. This is very common, and it is caused by several issues. Your PhD supervisor has to give you negative feedback to help you publish articles in top journals. Your PhD supervisor probably is dealing with their own issues.

3. Time management for PhDs. You will always feel that you are out of time during your PhD. You will never get a break, and every time you take a break, you feel guilty. I would try to set hours for yourself, so you know what you are doing work and when you are ok to go home.

4. You will not get tenure. The way that I think about this is thinking about the academic college, rather than your own institution. You want to be a position that you are contributing to the academic college, such that if you do not get a tenure at one place, someone else will take you at another place.

5. Feeling inadequate. You will always feel inadequate, and this will never change, so matter how famous you get. There are always more ideas, and more things that you should do. And, when you get famous, people will always discount your efforts.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.

r3ciprocity.com/: Peer proofreading and editing platform

A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.

The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
