The portuguese Queen D. Catarina de Bragança started the 5 o´clock tea in England (Portugal 1st european country to trade Tea with China). TEA = Transporte de Ervas Aromáticas (Aromatic herbs transportation), " TEA" = the three letters written on the boxes of "chá/tea" from Portugal.

Also another fun and important fact, the 007 Casino Royale book was inspired by certain events that took place during Ian Fleming wartime career at the Naval Intelligence Division (NID) during WW2. The main inspiration came from a trip to Portugal, where Fleming and the NID Director, Admiral Godfrey, went to the Estoril Casino and stayed at the Hotel Palacio (which is right next to the casino). Because of Portugal's neutral status, Estoril's population had been swelled by spies and agents from the warring regimes and they were mostly at these two places (the hotel and the casino). This paved the way as inspiration for the 007 book Casino Royale, which is basically the first entry in the series.

A lovely Japanese man once told me it was the Portuguese that gave them a word for the salutation "thank you": the Portuguese say "obrigada" (or obrigado if you're a man) and after meeting the Portuguese the Japanese, who used the act of bowing as a salutation for gratitude instead of speech, began to also use the word "oh-ree-gah-toe" for "thank you". 😉

Spain didnt get a better deal out of the Tordesilhas treaty, Portugal mainly did it to avoid interference from Spain around Africa, cause Portugal's main purpose was to get to India, going around Africa...and, the first division line was more to the east, wich left out what is today Brasil, but Portugal set it more to the west...so what, you would say. well, the official discovery date is 1500, so by 1494 Portugal already knew that there was land at that location...being a small country with not many people, they had to play it smart and not advertise any discoveries...

The great Portuguese (not Italian) discoverer, Christopher Columbus, was born in Southern Portugal.

The Portuguese also introduced the firearms into Japan, allowing the unification of the country under the rule of one Shogun; Also some Japanese words are derived from Portuguese: Sapon (soap); tempura (tempero - seasoning); arigato (obrigado- thank you), but there are some more; Thailand, where the kingdom of Sion was and still is the oldest Asian allied nation with Portugal , also had the malagueta 🌶 coming from Africa, that’s why the spicy Thai food! We also introduced the coconut trees 🌴 in India and Brasil
