Why Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Music Sounds Like Flying | SECRET Link to BOTW Theme (Lydian Mode)

Published 2023-04-08
In this video you’ll see that in the trailer theme music for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the moment when Link ascends through the sky using special ability recall features some amazing music . We break down the music theory behind. The “Zelda Chord” b6Maj7 and the “fake” Lydian mode sound. The theme also bears a striking resemblance to a theme from Breath of the Wild which I believe was intentional on the part of the composers.

  • It is so cool so see how this mode keeps coming back through the years in all sorts of media!
  • THANK YOU! "Teba's Encouragement" and the Vah Medoh ambience music are two of my favorite tracks from the BOTW soundtrack because they just nailed what it must sound like (musically) to fly.
  • Maybe a bit late but at the beginning of this trailer, the melody really reminds me of *Spirited Away*, the "Dragon boy" theme in particular, so much so that I don't know if it's a musical citation or not. And it would not surprise me, seeing the major Hayao Miyazaki's influence on BoW and very much likely on Tears of the Kingdom. Hell, the last trailer has a direct visual citation FROM *Princess Mononoke*, when Link has his arm covered by malice. So, to look at those zelda music, maybe we can also compare them with the music from Miyazaki's movie and how it creates a sort of back and forth between the two. Lemme know what you think.
  • I would legit watch hours of this- it’s so interesting! The Lydian mode of the Columbia theme blew my mind- the music in Zelda is what convinced me to play botw so this is true to my heart! 🙌🏻

man you're such a genius. im playing the piano myself but i never noticed everything you said. i legit cant understand why this channel has so little subscribers

Hell yeah! I actually wrote a short essay some years ago on this very topic (but moreso focusing on its relation to Revali's character to serve as an analysis from a score-centered perspective) and also called that melodic theme present in the OST the "Flight" motif, found in Rito Village, Vah Medoh, and my personal highlight: the strings that come in during the activation of terminals in the Shrine of Resurrection dungeon (which I tie back to Revali as a champion, given that each new entry during that song brings in elements that represent the other four champions and their people, in my opinion). I really want to revisit that essay one day and rework it into something better, investigate further (since I'm no expert at all when it comes to music theory, and I didn't know about the Lydian chord either, I was trying my best) and repost it with a more solid framework of references. I would shamelessly plug that mildly embarrassing thing here but... I don't know 😆 I'm just very happy that you're actually exploring these topics within Zelda music, which I've always wanted to see and sought adding my little grain of sand into one day. Anyway, I loved this video! And I am even more excited for TotK knowing we'll get more amazing compositions and exploration of what made BotW's music so special ❤️
  • @sledgen.
loved the video, but I have to warn you: nintendo have took down some videos using the "totk main theme" from the gameplay presentation, because They're salty I guess xD. Best not to use the song again until may the 12th, although it could've been a rare occasion. It's just good to be on the safe side!

I’m SOOOOO excited to hear all your analyses when we get the full TotK soundtrack
  • I’ve used the Lydian chord in my uploads way too many times and I didn’t even realise.
  • @composercode
Amazing video, once again!! And thanks for the shoutout! <3
  • Very nice! It’s so strange that so many of my favourite excepts of music featured Lydian - Dire Dire Docks, plus all the Zelda, Interstellar. Always loved Dragon Roost too! And my all time favourite of favourites - Toy Story!

F I N A L L Y dude I just came from your theme break down video for the final trailer and I have never hit the subscribe button so fast. as much as i love lore videos & theory breakdowns, music is SUCH an integral part to the zelda series, yet nobody talks about it!!! im very happy to have found your channel, looking forward to what else you have to say :)) (also i've always exceptionally loved the rito village/revali/vah medoh themes and now i know why lol. thank you lydian mode!)
  • I heard the Rito Village idea in that trailer track, for sure, but I always took it instead as an homage to the opening of Breath of the Wild, when leaving the Shrine of Resurrection. That was a G-F-G-F move that then stacked on Bb-Ab-Bb-Ab before resolving to the Silent Princess motif. The ToK trailer instead keeps rising and rising, ascending whole octaves before resolving.

@4:19 literally fave Billie song, maybe the zelda chord is why I love it so much

I don't pretend to know anything about music theory, but I enjoy your videos all the same. Looking forward to your announced "Zelda Music Theory video". As for why people are not so fond of BotW's OST is probably because it wasn't as present/prominent like in other Zelda-games (in which you always hear one theme or another, depending on area). I like BotW's music and I appreciate the reason why it's subdued; it fits the theme of an apocalyptic world. Everything is subdued; the environmental story telling, the music, the atmosphere. It's quiet and you have to actively look.
  • Zelda, Tomb Raider, and Final Fantasy. Epic video game music that I can just listen to the soundtracks for as well as covers. Never gets old.
  • Love it! I have never seen anybody make connections like this. Keep it up!
  • @heuxheux
Very good job again, I hope this channel blows up soon, you deserve. Let’s hope totk will bring in some fresh material to analyze!
  • @ryantelberson
