Whiskey & Facts: Karen Carpenter

Published 2024-05-09
Karen Carpenter possessed a three-octave contralto range which allowed her to create a distinctive melancholy sound that made her one of the most recognizable and respected vocalist during the 1970's.

Karen was voted the best drummer over Led Zeppelin's John Bonham in a Playboy poll conducted in 1975. Her drumming proficiency came from having a jazz background and marching band experience which allowed her to transition with effortless ease and subtle grace much like her idol, Buddy Rich.

Karen is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, despite having won multiple Grammy awards and selling over 100 million records - an oversight some would call beyond comprehension.

The Carpenters are definitely deserving of a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If they were black like The Jackson 5, they would be. Maybe that's hard to hear, but it's true. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a political mess.

It's not beyond comprehension. The HOF is notoriously political. They put in there who they want, not who should be.
