Whiskey & Facts: Jaco Pastorius

Published 2024-04-25
Jaco purchased his first bass guitar at the age of 17 and never looked back.He became renowned for his jazz fusion and funk roots and would end up playing with other illustrious artists such as Joni Mitchell and Pat Metheny.

Jaco's "Bass of Doom" was a fretless 1962 Fender Jazz bass guitar that would become his signature instrument and a testament to his brilliance as a musician.

Pastorius was only 35 when he died and had battled mental health issues throughout his life. He is generally considered to be the most influential bass player that ever lived.

Wow, what else can be said about Jaco? The guy had it all; amazing technical skills but also a masterful understanding of music in general. He wrote horn parts, drum parts for many songs, etc. I know he played piano and drums quite well. The guy just had amazing musical talent, all around, and not just with the bass. I really can't think of a more influential bass player. Such a tragic end for a guy who had a bright future.

Clarity is needed - say "bass guitar player", because "bass player" would have to take into account stand-up bass (don't get me started).
