Annihilation of The Trance: The first true Fana

“We are all in a post-hypnotic trance induced in early infancy.”
~ R. D. Laing

This evening’s topic — “Annihilation of The Trance: The first true Fana”

There is a concept, not much known and not well understood, called Fana al-Tanwim – the “annihilation of the trance”. This is the terrible shock that wakes one up IN the Dream State, and also lays the groundwork for one’s awakening FROM the Dream State.

Some Sufis have talked about this process at length but have had to do so in allegory and code, in order to protect themselves and their students.

These days it’s a bit safer to discuss these things, or at least relatively so, thanks to people like G. I. Gurdjieff, Hazrat Inayat Khan, and others who laid the groundwork for us to be able to comprehend our somnambulism in modern terms.

So let’s take an hour or so to examine Fana al-Tanawim, a highly revelatory stage in the process of learning how to remain Awake.

Perfect timing. Been having moments of who am I and identity realizations. The cycling had felt unstable but this matches perfectly. The distraction from the zombie reality

Part of this discussion reminded me of two similar lessons: Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras’ whole idea of these Siddhis actually being impediments that are testing you to see if what you really wanted were the powers or Intimacy with Reality. Or, as Yogananda said it: “Be like the baby that throws every toy away and cries because it simply wants to hold Mama.”
  • I completely disagree with this idea that your Thirteen year old awakening wasn't very important to the whole meaning of your life. It reminds me of C.S. Lewis's profound experience as a child. In his book Surprised By Joy. That was his heroes journey of trying to find that sweet spot of comfort, peace, home, but also realizing that there is always more to everything that we are learning about and that progress. Being something more than you thought possible for yourself. The freedom of being limitless in the positive characteristics of divine, universal growth through initiation and transformation. The journey can be lonely but not always. Sometimes loneliness is our teacher and friend.

I'm only up to min. 23 but found the talk about ''spiritual ego'' interesting. We can get trapped in spiritual ego for a long time. It is the most entrancing and delusive ego state of them all. We can be lost there for years and may drown in it. it is the great trap and we must be constantly vigilant for it is so sweet and enticing and is the greatest ego trip of them all.
