I figured this would end up on the tube if you were recording. My solid contribution was the awful tk on the mig 21 😢

Thanks for the video. The oversized F-5 strategy is what I'm excited to try once I manage to get a spot in Engima's without the game crashing. Also "Jester is such a finicky... piece of shit..." is so true right now lol Talking about the science, slats come out as a function of AoA, not just speed. If you pull >11.5 units or something under Mach ~0.8, the slats will come out. Without the slats and just pulling more AoA, you'll actually produce more drag for less lift as the boundary layer separates from the wing near critical AoA. Slats are designed to prevent this separation, allowing you to pull more and get lift despite slightly more drag. Because of all this, the F-4 will rate better with slats vs without because in a turn, it's all about L/D not just the big D. I'm curious to see what you discover if you try to max sustained turn with slats in vs out. There could maaaaybe be a niche part of the envelope where you could fly at an AoA just slightly higher than 11.5 deg but less than critical alpha so you might get away with locking the slats to produce slightly less total drag... But by the time you hear the beeping, you're well past that point in minimizing drag. Who knows if DCS honours this though. As for the flaps, they increase the camber and effective AoA of the wing so if you're at a very high alpha already and drop flaps while rolling, that could stall the upward wing so it makes sense why it would feel less stable in that regime.

aka “it’s easy when they all just show up in front of me” 😅😂😂😂

Interesting stuff about overriding the slats and flaps. I'm pretty poor at dogfighting in the F-5 but one tactic I've picked up that seems to work well is to use the flaps for a little extra turn performance but when I run out of energy and it's time to unload, bringing the flaps in helps claw back speed a little more quickly.
  • Some insight into the flaps, if you deploy them the AOA where the wings stalls decreases. You still produce more lift with flaps just at a lower AOA. Slats should increase the max AOA on most wings. Now this part is speculation its possible the flaps block or disturb the air going to the elevator reducing control and stability. I like how you flew without slats at max AOA, that is where the wing is most efficient in terms of LIFT per Drag L/D.

when people go into a vertical (like this guy 3:31) what i like to do is use the Sparrow with the cage mode without locking onto him, works surprisingly well. Its also good if jester is being a little bitch again.
  • If I understand correctly, in Boresight mode, the wait time is only 2.5 seconds. (And anecdotally, I’ve gotten plenty of good tracks with 2 seconds).

Good video, I think right after you recorded this I got in a dogfight with you in an F1 and you go 3rd partied by ground AA lol

The whole flaps thing is also a problem in the 21. At extremely low speeds you should NEVER deploy flaps. You are able to fly a LOT slower and still move without flaps. In the 21 it is pretty clear why that is though. When you deploy flaps at high AoA the airflow to the elevator is disrupted. It is great to have more winglift but what is the point if your elevator stalls out instead.

What is your startup procedure for the F-4E when you're playing ECW?
  • @Eagle015
For your axis commands what is your saturation Y for your pitch, because I play with an xbox controller and at 1:56 in the video I probably would have slammed into the mountain and I use 50 saturation Y for my pitch.
  • @dunbar555
    Don’t make me come fly an F-1 (FZG_Immel) ;)
  • @kosmouz
so you dont get a higher pitch when locked on fox 2 's? just regular growl and additional point on sight?
  • @Kiyodio
Wait you can turn off the slats entirely? Arent the slats automatic on the default setting?
  • @RedTail1-1
The real answer? Young kids and "virtual fighter pilots" that don't put in the time and effort to learn and get better.
