The UK “won’t stand by” while international shipping is under attack, the Government vowed as Iran-backed Houthi rebels said they would continue targeting vessels – including those from Britain.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper held crisis talks with the shipping industry to say the UK will not allow international maritime trade to be “held to ransom”.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the situation remained “concerning” as attacks persisted despite RAF airstrikes on Houthi positions.

The UK joined the US in carrying out strikes against the Houthis in Yemen last week, but ships have continued to be targeted along the vital Red Sea and Gulf of Aden trade routes.

The Sun’s Jerome Starkey joins TalkTV’s Jake Berry to discuss this further.

Jerome believes that various conflicts that are bubbling around the globe could ignite a wider global conflict, and Britain ‘must be prepared for it’.

You won’t find me lifting a finger to fight for this country. Thirty years ago I would have but Tony Blair gave these islands away already

If we go for conscription, I just wonder how all the illegal immigrants will react.

20 years looks very optimistic. It looks more like 3 years at best to me😅

I thought ‘preparing for conflict ‘was what the armed services actually get paid for?
  • @kevinbushby3931
Make those that call for war be at the front leading the troops in, bet there wouldnt be any then.

Albert Einstein — 'I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.' Though this quote predated the invention of social media comments sections.

20 years? No way, more like in 2-3 years, most likely in the Baltic states. Putin has few reasons to wait long, and he's also old himself.

I'd rather die than go to war for things I could not care less about.
  • @Scrapper.
I used to think that 'preppers' were headbangers, but now I think they're making sense. Disturbing times.

More like 1 or 2 years to prepare for war at most not 20 years . We need to act now
  • It’s been coming! The world is falling apart. I’ve thought this for a while. God even said that mankind would destroy themselves
  • As we are so short of service personnel maybe all these young men who want to come here to the uk on boats could be called up to fight for us 🙄I bet that would stop the boats 🇬🇧🇬🇧

Why don't all the world, so called 'leaders'(i.e. trouble makers..most of them.), just meet up in one of their 'palaces', , get a few beers and packets crisps in, and play the 'RISK' board game (under £30.00).. and leave the rest of us sensible, peace loving people out of it. I realise the arms manufacturers will lose out....but there would probably be slightly less mess.

Don’t worry, the conservative ethos is to spend less money on our forces and to have less men. They’ve got it all in hand.
